I Rejected My Obsessive Werebeast novel Chapter 3

Aurora’s POV
“W…What did you say?” Connor asked hoarsely. “You don’t care at all?!”
I ignored him because I was done with this entire nonsense. So I spun on my heel and ready to leave the room.
That’s when it happened.
I’d barely taken two steps when the chandelier let out an unsettling creak.
In the next heartbeat, the wires snapped.
BANG!!!
The entire chandelier came crushing down.
“Watch out!” Connor darted toward me in an instant, and I caught raw panic flickering in his eyes as I turned.
But the second our gazes locked, he abruptly changed direction and yanked Phoebe out instead. She threw herself into his arms screaming and crying.
The whole thing crashed hard into my body.
Pain exploded across my skull as I crumpled to the floor, consciousness slipping away fast.
Everyone was shouting. I heard someone scream my name. Then, everything faded to black.
I woke up in a crisp hospital bed. A nurse was standing by my bedside, checking my vitals.
“Oh you’re awake!” she said cheerfully. “How do you feel?”
I winced as the sharp pain shot through my body. “Um…a throbbing headache behind my temples? Besides that…nothing.”
“Relax. The pain was just a standard side effect from the head injury. We’ll put you on an overnight observation. You should be discharged tomorrow.” I nodded.
Just when I wanted to ask about Connor and Phoebe and everybody else who might get injured, the nurse suddenly clapped her hands together and continued in a dreamy voice.
“Oh your canine werebeast is so great. Do you know that he refused to leave your bedside when you were unconscious? And I caught him sobbing. How cute is that?”
“Where is he now?” I asked.
“That’s weird. He hurried out the second we said you were likely to wake up soon,” she said with a confused look.
I shut my eyes with a bitter smile.
It was hardly surprising.
Connor didn’t want me to know his true feelings. He was still trying to manipulate me by letting me believe that he’s into someone else.
“You take a little rest. I’ll check on you later.” The nurse left.
I lay back on the bed. But just a few minutes later, I heard the door opening up.
Phoebe sauntered inside. I kept my eyes closed because I didn’t want to spare her any of my attention.
She let out a soft chuckle. “Stop pretending to sleep. I know you’re awake.”
I cracked my eyes open. “What do you want?”
“Nothing much,” she shrugged dismissively. “You’ve got nothing left worth my effort anyway. Your parents, your friends, even your werebeast all belong to me now. You’re nothing but a pitiful loser.”
“You done gloating?” I said flatly. “You can leave now.”
My indifference must have enraged her. Because her temper flared instantly. “Why aren’t you mad at me? I took away your everything! You should be furious!”
“There’s no point growing angry over things that were never truly mine to begin with,” I said peacefully, “If they could be stolen so easily, they are not worth it.”
Her face twisted with anger. “Drop that condescending attitude. I hate it when you act like you’re doing me a charity.”
“But I AM doing you a charity, aren’t I? Because everything you’ve taken is stuff I once owned. You’re chewing my leftovers,” I said with a sarcastic smile.
Her eyes blazed with hatred. “There. You are looking down on me again. You think you’re so mighty hoity because you grew up in the Upper District? Bullshit. If you’d been the one sent to the Lower District, you’d have turned far worse than I ever did.”
I stared at her coldly. “I don’t know. But at the very least, I would never steal another person’s werebeast.”
“Shut up!” she shrieked, raising her palm ready to slap me.
Just as her arm flew forward, Connor stepped rapidly through the doorway.
We both saw him. And in a split second, Phoebe redirected the blow hard against her own cheek.
“Ahh!” she cried, holding her own red cheek. “Aurora, how can you slap me? I’m your sister.”
Connor’s bushy tail stiffened straight as a rod. He rushed past Phoebe and reached to grasp my hand…as if he were worried my hand might get red and swollen from slapping Phoebe.
“Connor?” Phoebe cried, staring up at him with glistening teary eyes.
Connor was snapped back to reality. He dropped my hand down and put on an angry look.
“Aurora, you’ve gone too far this time,” he snapped.
