Finnegan paused, leaning against the pillows on the hospital bed to look at Seraphina, sighing helplessly after a few seconds of silence.
"Seraphina, is it that every time I casually ask a question about her now, you're going to think I care about her? Well, if that's the case, why don't I just give you what you want? What do you want me to do? Do you want me to never mention her name again, to pretend her affairs have absolutely nothing to do with me? Would that make you happy?"
Seraphina had originally just meant to casually test the waters to see exactly how much weight Nora still held in Finnegan's heart.
She never expected Finnegan to get downright angry. In front of him, she had always been the one who was coaxed and pampered. He rarely spoke to her in that tone.
But whenever he actually showed his temper, panic would set in deep inside her.
At the end of the day, she was just a paper tiger in front of Finnegan. The moment he stood his ground, she didn't dare push any further.
Her smile swiftly shifted into a coquettish, reproachful pout. She reached out and patted his shoulder lightly, pulling back all her sharp edges.
"Look at you, why are you being so serious? I was just joking. Nora is part of The Fletcher Family after all, it's perfectly normal for you to care a little. I didn't even say anything, why are you getting so worked up?"
Finnegan said nothing more and turned away, clearly done with the conversation. Seraphina pouted and didn't bother asking for another rebuff.
At that moment, Cassie took off her headphones, slid off the sofa with her tablet, and walked over to Seraphina, tilting her little face up and tugging at her sleeve.
"Seraphina, can you buy me some more pretty, cool clothes? Like the ones you bought me last time. They look so unique, way better than what the other kids wear. They only wear those pink, lacey little dresses like the ones Mom buys me. They look disgusting."
"Look at what you did. Why are you so angry? Cassie just has her own preferred style. It's a good thing for a kid to have their own sense of aesthetics. We should support her. Don't scare the child like that."
Finnegan looked at Cassie hiding behind Seraphina, too afraid to look at him, and the inexplicable anger inside him slowly deflated.
He let out a deep breath, leaned back against the pillows, and softened his tone. "You two go ahead."
Seraphina took Cassie to the mall. The moment they stepped inside, Cassie let go of Seraphina's hand and made a beeline for Rogue Edge Apparel, the boutique with an avant-garde aesthetic featuring black leather jackets and sequined skirts displayed on the mannequins.
Her eyes sparkled as she turned, pointed at a black biker jacket, and shouted to Seraphina, "I want this one, buy it for me!"
