I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 320

Benedict looked at Nora, a rare, almost imperceptible trace of longing softening his perpetually cold eyes.

Nora lowered her head, offering a small smile. "Thank you, Mr. Harrison."

Watching their quiet exchange from across the table, Finnegan's face turned completely rigid. He had also stood up for Nora just moments ago, yet she hadn't given him so much as a glance, let alone a smile.

Suddenly, the gourmet food in his mouth tasted like ash. Seraphina observed the scene, her eyes growing dangerously cold.

Finnegan was clearly still in love with Nora. Seraphina realized she had severely underestimated the hold Nora had on him.

Back when Nora remained single and refused to date, Finnegan had been content staying with Seraphina, convinced that Nora was simply waiting for him. He believed that the second he reclaimed his true identity, Nora would fall right back into his arms. But now that another powerful man was standing by her side, Finnegan was panicking. He was desperate to drop the act and win her back.

Seraphina closed her eyes, taking a slow, calculated breath. She would never let him succeed.

She absolutely refused to let Nora threaten her position.

...

The meal soon came to an end. Nora and Benedict stepped out onto the private balcony to speak alone. It took Nora a long moment to gather her thoughts before she finally broke the silence.

"Dad, I've finalized the terms with Xander Harrison."

Benedict turned to look at her, his expression remaining perfectly stoic, betraying nothing. "What were the terms?"

Nora took a deep breath. "I know you've harbored resentment toward me for years regarding Mom and my brother's deaths, and I've spent all this time trying to atone for it. It wasn't until today that I realized it wasn't an accident. I cannot allow their murderers to walk free. I'm going to get justice for them. I made a deal with Xander—he will use his resources to uncover the truth, and in exchange, I will step in to properly raise Bonnie."

"I know you've hit dead ends for years, which is why you pushed me into this marriage. I harbor no resentment toward you for it."

Benedict stared at his daughter, his eyes dark and unfathomable. It was impossible to tell what was running through his mind.
