"She’s responding well to the treatment," the doctor said with a reassuring smile. "She’s asleep now because her body is exhausted. What she ingested was too much for a child her age, but she’s stable for now. She should wake up within the next hour or so."
Instead of relief...
A fresh wave of guilt crashed over me.
She really was...
Too little to go through all of this.
The doctor looked at me gently.
"For now, let her rest."
Then he added,
"And you should get some rest as well. You’ll need your strength when she wakes up."
"Thank you, doctor," I whispered.
He gave a small nod before walking away.
I remained standing there, my eyes fixed on the little girl lying beyond the glass.
She looked so small...
So fragile...
And all I could think was that I should have been the one lying in that bed instead.
I suddenly remembered something and turned to Uncle Herbert and Alexander.
"What were the results?" I asked.
The two of them exchanged glances.
Without saying a word, Alexander reached into his pocket and handed me a folded piece of paper.
I slowly unfolded it and began reading.
By the time I reached the end, my eyes had widened.
"Through food...?" I whispered.
"Either food or a drink," Uncle Herbert explained. "We tried to get the meal she had this morning so the hospital could run tests on it, but by the time I contacted the mansion, everything had already been discarded."
I slowly looked up at him.
"So does this mean..."
My voice trembled.
"Does this mean someone tried to poison Aimy?"
"Not necessarily," Alexander said quietly. "The doctor also mentioned it could have been an allergic reaction to something she ate or drank."
I looked at him.
I knew he was only trying to comfort me.
But...
Aimy was a picky eater.
She’d never had any serious allergies.
"Aimy is picky about food," I whispered, tears filling my eyes once again, "but she doesn’t have any serious allergies."
"Don’t cry, Alicia."
Uncle Herbert stepped forward and gently pulled me into a comforting embrace.
"Aimy is going to be alright. And whatever happened..."
His voice hardened slightly.
"We’re going to find out."
He continued trying to comfort me, but my thoughts were already elsewhere.
Someone...
Someone might have tried to poison my daughter.
But why?
Why would anyone do something so cruel to a two-year-old child?
Who would want to hurt us here in Rosewood Town?
For the past two years, everyone here had treated us with nothing but kindness and warmth.
So why would something like this suddenly happen?
And if the problem really was the food...
That only made everything more confusing.
Aunt Margaret personally supervised everything prepared in the kitchen, just like she always did.
There was no way anyone could have accidentally added something different.
Then...
What else had Aimy taken?
The apple juice.
But I’d prepared that myself.
I hadn’t added anything unusual.
Then what really happened?
"Sir."
A woman’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.
I looked up.
Karen was standing behind Alexander, dressed as usual in clothes that revealed far more than I thought was appropriate.
Alexander turned toward her.
"Why did you take so long?" he asked coldly.
"I’m sorry, sir. I had to sort everything out at the airport before coming here. As soon as I found out you were still at the hospital, I came immediately."
She then looked at Uncle Herbert and me.
"CEO Herbert. Director Alicia."
"She did?" I asked softly.
Veronica smiled and nodded.
"She spoke with the doctor before leaving and asked what Aimy would be allowed to eat. Then she went home and prepared everything herself."
My heart warmed.
Ever since I came to Rosewood Town, Aunt Margaret had cared for me as though I were her own daughter.
There were times when she made me forget what it felt like to grow up without a mother.
"I’m really grateful to her," I murmured.
"Let me help you with those," Uncle Herbert said as he reached for the bags.
Veronica shook her head with a smile.
"You look tired yourself. Go home and freshen up."
"It’s alright. I can stay a little longer..."
"No, Uncle." I gently interrupted him.
"Since Aunt is here, let’s just go home together."
He looked at me, still reluctant.
"And..." I admitted quietly, "I don’t think I’m in the right state of mind to drive right now."
He sighed in defeat.
"Alright."
Then he looked back at Veronica.
"At least let me carry the bags inside."
"You don’t have to worry," Veronica replied reassuringly. "I can manage."
Knowing there was no convincing her, Uncle Herbert finally nodded.
He got into the driver’s seat while I climbed into the passenger seat.
Soon, we drove out of the hospital.
The drive home was comfortably quiet.
I found myself staring absentmindedly out the window, watching the familiar streets of Rosewood Town pass by.
Every now and then, I caught Uncle Herbert stealing worried glances in my direction.
Each time I noticed...
The guilt in my chest only grew heavier.
For the past two years, the Whitemore family had done everything they could to make me feel loved and protected.
They had supported me through my darkest moments without ever asking for anything in return.
And now...
Because of me...
They were all worried once again.
