"President Vaughn?!"
In just one short hour, Ryan’s heart had been on such a rollercoaster he felt like he couldn’t take it anymore.
"How could you say something like that? You and Miss Archer have only been married for a few days! How could you get a divorce over something like this? Miss Archer isn’t mad at you. She’s so gentle and magnanimous. Just apologize to her properly and treat her better from now on. It doesn’t have to come to..."
Damien Vaughn’s gaze was unfocused, staring at nothing in particular.
"That’s enough. Go."
"President Vaughn!"
Damien Vaughn’s stern demeanor suddenly returned. He shot Ryan a sharp glare that scared him into silence.
’Maybe he just said it in a fit of anger. I should give the two of them some space and time to talk things out.’
Ryan backed out of the room.
Cecelia Archer cried for a long time. Her eyes ached, and so did her neck.
She could feel Damien Vaughn’s eyes on her the entire time. And since he had agreed to a divorce, it seemed pointless to keep crying. She gradually calmed down.
She had wiped her tears and snot all over Damien Vaughn’s expensive, beautiful pillow. She tossed the pillow to the floor, sat up, and stared at him with resentful eyes, not saying a word.
Damien Vaughn looked back at her. Cecelia couldn’t decipher the emotion in his eyes.
They stared at each other for who knows how long before Damien Vaughn suddenly unlocked Elsa’s phone and handed it to her.
"Watch this."
"Damien, Brandon, hello..."
Elsa’s fluent, pleasant English rang out clearly in the lounge.
At first, Cecelia stubbornly held her head high, refusing to look at the phone. But as she listened, her curiosity eventually got the better of her. She looked over and then took the phone in her hands.
Finally, she understood.
"You have a sister?"
Damien Vaughn let out a deep breath, leaned his head back, and rested wearily against the chair.
"Not anymore."
Not anymore... Those two simple words were filled with endless sorrow.
Cecelia could feel his pain.
The girl in the video was so vibrant and beautiful. It was truly saddening that she had chosen to end her own life at such a young age.
But!
People die every day in this world, and every person who dies is someone’s beloved. No matter how wonderful this girl was, to Cecelia, she was just a stranger. Was she supposed to unconditionally forgive Damien Vaughn just because his sister had passed away?
Cecelia locked the phone’s screen and set it aside.
"So, what’s the point of showing me this? To tell me that everything you’ve done recently was justifiable and that I’ve misunderstood you?"
"No." Damien Vaughn shook his head, his eyes closed.
His jawline was so sharp, making his features look more defined.
Only then did Cecelia realize he had lost weight—a lot of weight since before his business trip to Corvane.
Not only was his jawline sharper and his Adam’s apple more prominent, but even his cheeks were slightly sunken.
"I was wrong. Terribly wrong."
Damien Vaughn said, his voice weak.
"All this time, I’ve been too self-centered, never considering other people’s feelings. All I knew was that I liked you and wanted to keep you by my side, so I faked my mother’s death. I never considered your feelings or your situation. I was terribly wrong."
"You were right. If Elsa hadn’t been photographed, I would have hidden it from you for the rest of my life. I’m a scumbag."
Every word he said made sense. He had said everything she wanted to say herself, leaving Cecelia suddenly at a loss for words.
"So..."
