Oz’s POV
"Oz."
The single word cuts through the mountain air like a blade.
Behind Malcom, I watch his wolves maintaining perfect formation. These aren’t wild animals driven by instinct. They’re disciplined soldiers following orders.
He didn’t create mayhem.
He built an army.
"You expected us to break apart," I state.
"I anticipated weakness," he responds coolly.
"What do you see now?" Kian’s voice carries deadly calm.
Malcom surveys our defensive perimeter, the unified forces holding their positions, the complete absence of fear or internal conflict.
"I see unexpected unity," he admits.
The mate bond thrums softly between Kian and me.
"Then withdraw," I command.
His piercing stare doesn’t waver from mine.
"You’ve grown beyond my calculations," he says. "But calculations can be adjusted."
There’s the truth.
No retreat.
No remorse.
Just strategy.
"You forced our hand," I counter.
"You reacted exactly as predicted," he fires back.
This standoff isn’t about territory anymore.
It’s about fundamental beliefs.
"You assumed terror would destroy us first," I say softly.
"I assumed emotional attachments would cloud judgment," he replies.
The bond grows more intense, not unstable, but hyper-aware of his implications.
"You confuse love for liability," I tell him.
"I evaluate compromising factors," he corrects.
"What are your terms?" the Northwood Ridge Alpha interjects harshly.
Malcom shifts his attention briefly.
"Restructured boundaries," he states. "Joint leadership."
The silence that follows could shatter stone.
He isn’t here to surrender.
He’s here to divide power.
"You believe your little test earned you a seat at the table," I observe.
"I believe applied pressure exposed structural flaws," he counters.
"You found none," Kian states flatly.
Malcom’s focus returns to me.
"I discovered flexibility," he concedes. "But emotional flexibility creates unpredictability."
Always back to this.
The bond.
"You created this alliance," I say, keeping my voice level. "Yet you think you understand it better than we do."
"I know I do," he responds without a hint of doubt.
His quiet arrogance fills the space between us.
Around the valley, our forces maintain position, but I sense rising tension barely contained by discipline.
"You chose manipulation over honest discussion," I point out.
"You wouldn’t have been receptive," he answers.
He’s probably right.
Which makes this situation infinitely more complicated.
"You betrayed your own pack’s trust," I accuse.
"I conducted necessary assessment," he clarifies.
"You put innocents at risk," Kian growls.
"I managed acceptable exposure," Malcom deflects.
My hands stay loose at my sides, but the fire in my chest transforms from surprise to razor-sharp focus.
"You’re surrounded," I say quietly. "In a valley with no escape routes."
"Yes."
"And you expect this to end with negotiations."
"Absolutely."
His confidence isn’t false bravado.
It’s cold calculation.
"You were wrong before," I remind him.
"I’ve adapted," he states.
The bond strengthens slightly, not pulling or breaking, but solidifying with the gravity of this moment.
He isn’t a rogue threat.
