Hearing that, Damian climbed back down from the windowsill.
He didn't seem to give a second thought to his injuries, but Scarlett watched him, her heart pounding with worry.
Only when he landed safely and appeared unharmed did she finally let out a breath of relief.
Damian walked over to where she stood and looked down at her. "You're really sure I should use the front door?" he asked, a faint tease in his tone. "Won't anyone see me coming out of your room?"
Scarlett didn't bother hiding the truth. "Everyone already knows you're here with me," she said plainly.
That gave Damian pause. "Oh," he replied, suddenly feeling a little out of place.
After all, Scarlett was a young woman living with her family, and he'd been staying in her bedroom without even greeting the Therons properly.
But what was done was done—he'd have to face it sooner or later.
And if Scarlett was the one telling him to walk out the front door, how could he refuse?
When he reached the bedroom door, though, Damian hesitated. He turned back toward Scarlett and lowered his voice. "Leave the window unlocked for me tonight, alright? I can't sleep well unless I'm holding you."
Instead of refusing, Scarlett's first response was practical. "Just use the front door. No climbing. You're hurt—it's not safe."
A slow, warm smile spread across Damian's face. He walked back to her, drew her gently into his arms, and murmured, "I really hate leaving you. Wish I could keep you right here with me all the time."
Scarlett didn't pull away. She let him hold her, staying quiet in his embrace.
After a long moment, Damian leaned down and brushed a soft kiss against her lips. "I'd better go now?" he whispered.
Scarlett nodded. "Yeah."
He reached up and gently pinched the tip of her nose. "Be good," he said softly. "I won't be long."
Scarlett made a small sound in reply. "Mhm."
Damian chuckled, his expression bright and open. "Alright, I'll make it quick. Don't forget to miss me."
Scarlett didn't answer that. She just watched as he slipped out of her bedroom and disappeared down the hall.
After he left, Scarlett sat on the edge of her bed, staring into space for a while.
Once she snapped out of it, she ate the dinner she'd brought upstairs earlier.
Not long after she finished, Clara came in.
But in truth, he was steadier and more committed than most of those so-called loyal, devoted men out there.
Scarlett was used to his teasing by now. She didn't bother responding to that last remark. After a short pause, she asked curiously, "How did you get in anyway?"
It was still early. Normally, Nathan and Violet would still be downstairs at this hour.
Had they given him a hard time when he came in?
Damian set her down gently on the couch, then knelt in front of her. "Through the front door, just like you told me," he said, his eyes steady on hers. "You said it was snowing and slippery out, so no climbing through windows. I remember every word you say, you know."
Scarlett looked surprised. "But my brother... Wasn't he downstairs?"
What she really meant was—did Nathan try to stop you?
Damian laughed lightly. "Oh, he was downstairs alright. Told me to hurry up and come keep you company."
Scarlett didn't buy that for a second. She just frowned at him, suspicion clear in her eyes.
Seeing her doubtful, almost annoyed expression, Damian grinned. "Okay, okay, I'm kidding. One of the staff let me in. Nathan and Violet weren't downstairs."
