The moment Mavis recognized the newcomer, her heart skipped a beat. She knew exactly what this woman was capable of.
Not long ago, Phoenix Prescott had single-handedly manipulated Meredith and Thaddeus Miller into reconciling, smoothly kicking that idiot Marcus Miller out of the picture.
And the recent bloodbath that decimated the Prescott Group was entirely her doing.
She had crushed a massive corporate empire by herself, forcefully dragging a deeply entrenched legacy family out of the elite circle. In Highcrest's high society, Phoenix was now a terrifying figure on par with Pierce Sterling, the Reaper of Cloudhaven.
How could Mavis not be terrified when such a ruthless predator appeared at the climax of her power grab?
"Phoenix, what brings you here?" Mavis took a deep breath, fighting the tremor in her fingertips as she forced a dignified smile. "If you're looking for Meredith, it's a shame. She's not here."
Phoenix's expression was glacial as she strode into the room.
The sharp clatter of her heels against the floor sounded like a death knell. The freezing aura she brought with her suffocated Mavis.
"Get up." Phoenix looked down at her with a predatory gaze, her words dropping like shards of ice. "You don't deserve that seat."
Mavis's smile instantly froze.
Humiliated in front of everyone, she forced herself to meet that piercing stare, despite the fear gnawing at her insides.
"Phoenix, Lumina Jewelry is the life's work of my sister, Meredith. Since she's tied up abroad, it's only natural for me to step in and manage things on her behalf, isn't it?" She paused, raising her voice to feign confidence. "As for you, even if you are Meredith's best friend, you're ultimately an outsider. What right does an outsider have to crash an executive board meeting?"
Provoked by her words, the shareholders turned hostile glares toward Phoenix.
"Ms. Prescott, we respect that you're friends with Meredith, but business is business," General Manager Lyle Foster puffed out his chest, putting on airs as he issued a stern warning. "Please leave immediately, or I'll be forced to call security."
Phoenix didn't get angry; she simply laughed. Her mocking gaze slowly swept over the men and women lining the conference table.
"You know nothing, yet you bark so loudly. What a bunch of clowns," she drawled, her voice dripping with venom. "Peyton, tell them if I have the right to stand here."
Hearing this, Peyton, who had been pushed into a corner, immediately straightened her spine and stepped to Phoenix's side. With Phoenix backing her, her confidence surged, and her voice rang out loud and clear.
"Everyone, it's true that Meredith founded Lumina Jewelry. But what you probably don't know is that her sole purpose for creating this company was to fulfill a promise—" Peyton scanned the room, her words echoing like thunder. "To ensure that Lumina Jewelry would be the absolute financial backing for Phoenix Prescott!"
