Runaway Mommy: My Boss is the Father novel Chapter 21

As Seraphina spoke, she kept a close eye on Jaxson's reaction.

He didn't even look up. "Get out," he said coldly.

He looked entirely unwilling to discuss anything regarding Phoebe.

Seraphina was slightly confused. Did Jaxson really not know Phoebe was working at the same company?

But seeing his dark expression, she didn't dare press the issue. "Then I'll wait for you so we can leave together after work," she murmured. "Valerie suggested it."

Jaxson gave a noncommittal hum and didn't bother rejecting her again.

After Seraphina left, Jaxson stared blankly at the financial reports on his screen. He recognized every English word, but strung together, none of them registered in his brain.

Phoebe had claimed she didn't know he was here?

Why didn't she just say she didn't know him at all?

Frustrated, Jaxson loosened his tie, giving himself room to breathe.

He had been proud since childhood, a true prodigy. Arthur Hayes's other sons had all been disappointments, and many assumed The Hayes Group was destined to decline, right up until Richard Hayes had Jaxson.

He was born a genius, getting whatever he wanted from a young age.

Even his part-time jobs during college were just stepping stones Arthur had arranged to shut up the rest of the family.

And Jaxson truly hadn't disappointed.

The moment he graduated, he took over The Hayes Group. He completely ignored the hazing and criticisms from the old-fashioned board members.

But over these past three years, a woman named Phoebe would frequently haunt his midnight dreams.

She had a smile as radiant as a blooming flower. Back when they were dating in college, she had cared for him meticulously, attending to every little detail, slowly drawing out a different kind of affection from him.

Yet, she broke up with him at the drop of a hat. She threw him away the moment she was done with him, moving on flawlessly to get married and have a kid.

Jaxson lit a cigarette.

The smoke swirled around his fingertips. The bitter taste of nicotine matched the cloudy, somber haze that settled over his deep, predatory gaze.
