Runaway Mommy: My Boss is the Father novel Chapter 33

Phoebe didn't even need to look up to feel the heavy rain lashing against her face. Her clothes were plastered to her skin, and she let out a violent, pathetic shiver.

The Wrangler was parked right at the subway entrance. The moment she met the driver's eyes, he laid on the horn, delivering several sharp, impatient blasts.

Biting her lower lip, Phoebe braved the howling storm and sprinted toward the car, yanking on the rear door handle.

It wouldn't open.

Rainwater blurred the windows, streaming down the glass. Terrified of making Jaxson wait any longer, she tried the passenger door instead.

It clicked open effortlessly.

She looked at him, her face pale. “Could you unlock the back door?”

After all, the passenger seat didn't feel like a place she had any right to occupy.

Jaxson's expression was ice.

“Get in the back? What, you think I'm your chauffeur?”

When she thought about it, he made a fair point.

Once she settled into the passenger seat, she realized she was completely drenched. Water dripped steadily from the ends of her hair, sliding onto the luxurious leather upholstery.

Phoebe spoke automatically, “I'm so sorry, Mr. Hayes. I'll pay for the car detailing.”

Jaxson didn't put the car in drive right away.

Instead, he reached out and grabbed a pack of soft facial towels that Valerie Quinn had bought and forgotten in the car during her last ride, tossing them onto Phoebe's lap.

They were clearly a woman's item.

Had Seraphina left them? Or did Jaxson stock them himself?

Jaxson used to be a typical, clueless guy who barely noticed details. When he bought Phoebe lipstick in the past, he got her a horrific, neon Barbie pink.

So it turned out that when he truly loved a woman, he actually would keep thoughtful little items in his car for her.

Clutching the towel, Phoebe lowered her head to wipe her face, using the motion to desperately hide the sudden sting of tears in her eyes.

Jaxson's voice was devoid of warmth. “No need. Save your pennies for your daughter's medical bills.”

He was right.

Right up until Edward passed away, he had been obsessing over a Wrangler just like this, one he couldn't even manage to reserve. Phoebe remembered the price tag—it was over a hundred grand.

This car had a nearly identical trim level to Jaxson's.
