Evangeline stood up.
Soren instinctively took two steps toward her, wanting to explain exactly what happened, but she gave him no opening.
She reached out and shoved him straight out the door without a shred of hesitation.
As the door slammed shut in his face, he caught her dead, impassive stare. It was obvious she fully believed he was the one who had hurt Finn.
Soren was driven to the point of madness.
What made it worse was that she hadn't even given him a chance to defend himself.
He could easily prove he hadn't touched the guy, but she didn't even harbor a sliver of doubt. The moment she walked in, she had already convicted him in her mind.
A wave of utter powerlessness washed over him.
Inside the room, the doctor arrived quickly after Evangeline pressed the call button. After a brief examination, they claimed nothing was critically wrong, instructing the nurses to administer new medication through his IV.
Evangeline fussed over him, handing him warm water to rinse his mouth and personally changing the blood-stained sheets.
Only when she saw some color return to his face did she finally sit down in the chair beside him.
Finn looked at her deeply furrowed brow, letting out a soft chuckle as he reached out to smooth the crease. "Relax, I'm fine. I'm not that fragile. Don't worry."
How could she not worry?
He looked like he was at death's door.
"What was Soren doing here anyway?" she asked, her tone instantly freezing over at the mention of his name.
Instead of answering, Finn smiled. "He's your ex-husband of five years. If you treat him like that, aren't you afraid you'll completely break his heart and he'll stop loving you?"
"That would be perfect," she fired back. "One less nuisance to deal with."
"But I heard you used to be madly in love with him," Finn paused, his gaze turning serious. "If he truly wants to turn things around, if he does everything in his power to make amends and love you..."
"Would you remarry him?"
Her hands paused mid-motion as she peeled an apple.
She looked up to meet his eyes.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Finn’s words were dripping with obvious jealousy.
