With that, Pip clapped his chubby hands together with a loud smack and nodded enthusiastically. But he quickly quieted down, his big, round eyes fixing nervously on Rowan. Having been apart for ten days, he clearly missed his dad.
Lyra watched as Rowan took a step forward, closing the distance between them.
Guilt gnawed at her for deliberately cutting contact for so long. She gently tapped Rowan's chest and prompted the baby, "Pip, who is this?"
Pip continued to stare blankly at Rowan, but in an instant, his little eyes grew red. He threw his short, chubby arms wide open and lunged toward Rowan with all his might, sobbing loudly as he cried out, "Dada..."
Rowan leaned down and caught Pip securely in his arms, his predatory gaze melting into something entirely soft. He buried his face in the top of his son's head, pressing a kiss into his hair, and gently patted his back, murmuring low, soothing words until the tears stopped.
Standing off to the side, Nina felt a wave of emotion. Seeing such an intimidating, ruthless man drop all his defenses and become so incredibly tender with his child was a powerful sight.
Knowing he had a gunshot wound to the shoulder, Lyra voiced her concern. "Should you be holding him if you're injured?"
Rowan answered flatly, "It's fine."
"How bad is your injury, really?" she asked softly.
"It's healed." His tone was dismissive; he clearly had no intention of discussing his wounds.
He raised his gaze, his dark eyes locking onto Lucas from across the courtyard.
Rowan temporarily handed Pip back to Lyra. "I'm going to have a chat with him."
While Rowan and Lucas talked upstairs in the tearoom, Nina paced nervously, constantly glancing toward the upper floor. Lyra assured her a few times that everything was fine and that the two men weren't about to start a brawl, which finally helped Nina relax.
Half an hour later, Rowan and Lucas emerged. They both looked surprisingly relaxed, and Nina breathed a heavy sigh of relief.
Knowing it was time to part ways, Lucas looked at Lyra with complete sincerity. "Lyra, I'm sorry for everything in the past. I hope you have a wonderful life from here on out."
Lyra replied with polite warmth. "Lucas, I wish you and Nina all the happiness in the world."
The Chavez family got into their car and slowly pulled away from the inn. Lyra suddenly remembered something. "Oh, by the way, I've been spending his money these past few days. Make sure you pay him back."

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
