Jeffrey had downed his fair share of drinks tonight, too, and years of repressed feelings were finally bubbling to the surface. "If you can't make her happy, then let her go. If she's truly guilty, find the evidence and let the law handle it."
A dark storm brewed in Gideon's eyes, his voice dropping to a gravelly rasp—
"I will never agree to a divorce. I can give her the title of Mrs. Gray. That's exactly what she wants anyway. I'm the one she loves."
But despite his bold words, the firmer he sounded, the heavier the creeping dread and insecurity weighed on his chest.
Jeffrey merely offered a word of advice. "If you're not going to divorce her, then treat her right. Life is too short to let misunderstandings blind you. They never found Xavier's body. For all we know, he could walk through the door tomorrow."
Out in the lounge, Harrell stood up. "Let's head back in. It's been long enough for them to hash it out. If we wait any longer, I'm afraid they'll start throwing punches."
Logan checked his watch and agreed that enough time had passed.
Together, they made their way back to the VIP room.
Outside the bar, the night was dark and the wind howled with a biting chill.
Lydia pulled her scarf tighter around her neck. The neon lights of the club flashed behind her, casting colorful, dancing reflections on the wet pavement.
She clutched the divorce papers in her hands. The slightly crumpled edges of the documents mirrored the tangled mess of her emotions.
Even now, she loved Gideon deeply. If her mother-in-law hadn't threatened her own mother, she never would have agreed to sign the papers.
Her mother had sacrificed everything to raise her. She couldn't be selfish enough to let her suffer.
"Have some dignity and sign the papers! My Gideon doesn't love you at all. Why do you insist on clinging to him?"
Catherine's voice had been dripping with venom when she called that afternoon to rush the process.
