Jane blinked her wide, innocent eyes. "I have no idea. I've never heard her mention it. She's so young... Is she?"
"Just curious," Serena brushed it off. Internally, she sneered. Lydia probably wasn't married, but even if she was, having a kid that age was absolutely scandalous. How young was she when she spread her legs for some random guy?
Right at that moment, Lydia walked through the doors. She immediately spotted Serena hovering by her desk, chatting up Jane.
As she got closer, she noticed the matching coffee cups on Jane's desk and in Serena's hand. It didn't take a genius to figure out Serena was schmoozing for gossip.
"Lydia!" Jane's eyes lit up when she saw her. "It's been a minute! Serena was just asking if you were married. I told her I didn't know. You don't even have a boyfriend, right?"
Serena panicked internally. You idiot, why would you just say that...
Lydia's cold gaze settled on Serena. Hiding her momentary awkwardness, Serena stepped aside and offered a cloying smile. "Lydia, I never would have guessed you were... a mother."
She deliberately dragged out the word 'mother', raising her volume just enough to ensure the entire office heard. The room plunged into a dead silence.
Lydia's spine went rigid, her mind flatlining.
Every single colleague snapped their heads up, their eyes zeroing in on Lydia with a mix of utter shock and ravenous curiosity.
"A mother? Did I hear that right? Lydia is so young, how does she have a kid?"
"No way. I thought she was single."
"Is she serious? Getting married in this economy takes guts, but having a baby is just career suicide!"
The hushed murmurs rippled across the room, quiet but perfectly audible to Lydia.
