Chapter 145

Landon, on the other hand, cleared his throat, and I looked up at him. He was staring at me with a deep frown on his lips, almost like a disappointed father.

“You can at least pretend to like your options,” he said, and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

Was I acting like a child?

Yes.

Did I care?

Not in the least.

“Cora is next,” Landon said, and then he stepped aside for Cora to walk through the doorway.

Landon left a moment later, shutting the door behind him. Cora stood at the doorway, her face pale and her eyes looking anywhere but at me. I could tell she was nervous.

This type of thing wasn’t in her element; there were a few concubines I already knew were safe choices to choose from- concubines who have no interest in becoming queen.

Cora, Jasmine, and Claira… I had looked into them around the time they started hanging around Cecilia. Or rather, I had Landon look into them. He confirmed that they are harmless and have their own goals for when they return to their packs.

Cora seemed to be the quietest of the trio; she’s the one I’ve noticed hanging around Cecilia a bit more than the others. Which means, she probably knows more.

When she didn’t make any movements, not even a single curtsy, I let out a breath and waved my hand towards the couch in front of me.

“Sit,” I ordered, trying to keep my tone even, but the growing irritation was evident.

She swallowed and made her way towards the couch, lowering herself. Her movements were stiff, and her hands were clearly trembling as she held onto the skirt of her gown. I assessed her for a moment before leaning back in my seat.

“You’re nervous.”

She finally looked up at me, her cheeks reddening.

“I’m afraid I’m just confused, Your Majesty,” she admitted.

“Confused about what?”

She hesitated.

“Why did you choose to speak with me…” she said, and then she looked away again as if the question physically pained her to ask.

“You are the quietest of the group. It makes you observant,” I comment.

Her body stills for a moment, and she lifts her gaze to look at me.

“I might have observed a thing or two,” she said. “Though, Your Majesty, if I tell you what I’ve observed, it would be breaking trust. So, I’d prefer if you didn’t ask me such questions.”

She could see right through me; what the hell was I doing?

This had to be the dumbest idea I’ve ever had, but I couldn’t admit fault.

“I’m not sure what you are talking about,” I tell her, and then I wanted to kick myself for such a flimsy excuse.

She leaned forward, and now I’m seeing a whole new confidence because she knew exactly why I asked her to be here

“Let’s be honest, Your Majesty,” she said, her tone low. “I’m not really the one you want seated in front of you right now.”

She stood at that moment, and my eyes followed her.

“If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be going now. And don’t worry…I won’t tell her about this.”

Then, she was out the door.

After a beat of silence, Landon poked his head in.

“That was fast; is everything okay?” Landon asked, his brows furrowed.

“Just send in the last one. What’s her name again?” I asked, to be honest, I only picked a random woman off the list.

“Sophia,” Landon answered. “Are you sure-”
