“Anna?” I asked. I thought about it for a moment before I lifted one shoulder. “Imean, she’s from my pack. She’s an Omega. I didn’t really know her well, but I remembered seeing her sometimes at the packhouse. She’s been helpful during my time here, though. Why do you ask?”

He looks around for a moment, like he’s afraid someone might overhear.

“She was spotted going into your room with no cleaning supplies earlier in the day,” he explained, making my heart stop in my chest. “She left pretty quickly afterward. Not enough time to really do much of anything… accept…”

His voice trailed off, leaving the rest up to my imagination. My stomach twisted.

“Except for leaving a necklace in my room,” I said, my voice almost haunted.

He nodded his head once.

“Right,” he murmured. “I would just be careful with who you trust around here.”

I nodded slowly.

I wasn’t sur what more to say, and I wasn’t sure what to think. Why would Anna try to frame me for stealing a necklace that I hadn’t stolen? It didn’t make any sense to me, but before I could think too much about it, Lora pulled, and it made my steps falter in the middle of the dance floor.

“Mate,” she said, more urgently this time.

My heart thudded against my ribs as I looked up at Jax. Was she talking about him? No… that didn’t make sense. I would know if Jax was my mate.

“Outside!” Lora all but shouted, making me wince, and Jax frowned.

“Are you okay?” Jax asked, his brows pinched together.

I went to answer him, but Lora’s voice echoed through his head again, halting my words in my throat. 1

“Outside!” She repeated. “Mate is outside!”

I pulled away from Jax as if he had burned me. I wasn’t sure whether it was my doing or Lora’s, but I knew I needed to get outside before she took complete control. The full moon was messing with both our minds, and I needed the fresh air anyway.

“Cecilia?” Jax asked, reaching out for me. “What’s going on?”

Just as his fingertips grazed my arm, I pulled away.

“I have to…” I tried to say, Lora’s voice cutting through again, and this time, I nearly did lose control completely.

“Outside! Mate is outside!!”

I pressed my fingers to my temple, a headache from her forceful voice starting to brew.

“I’m sorry,” I said, my voice breathier than I meant it. “I need to leave.”

Without thought, I turned outwards towards the back patio and ran towards it, completely ignoring Jax’s yelling after me. I didn’t stop; I couldn’t stop. I needed to get outside before Lora lost it completely.

I reached the back patio quickly and pulled the door open, thankful that it wasn’t locked. The cool night air immediately clung to my skin, and I realized how much skin was actually showing. I wrapped my arms around myself and started towards the garden area. I wasn’t sure why, but I had a strong urge to go there suddenly, and Lora didn’t protest.

She was urgent and excited… and I could feel her nervousness, too. Or maybe it was mine… I couldn’t be sure.

It was quiet out here, and I wasn’t convinced that anybody else was here. The cold air helped regulate my breathing, though my nerves were still jumbled.

The moonlight spilled across the garden, silver and cold, illuminating everything too clearly. I found myself frozen for a moment, just staring at it like it held all the answers. It was strong, and I could feel its power radiating through me and making it hard for Lora to resist. She wanted to take control, and I was holding her inside of me, not wanting to lose it here.

Branches snapped somewhere behind me, and she jolted, already knowing it was our mate. This was it… I was about to meet him for the first time. I was suddenly nervous for a different reason now.
