Chapter 172
“I thought I should check on you,” she said softly. “Are you unwell?”
I stared at her for a moment too long. Everything Jax had told me earlier was still freshrin my mind, and now I couldn’t help wondering if I had been foolish to trust her.
“I’m fine. I got something on my dress, so I came here to change.”
“You look a little pale. Do you need tea? Or perhaps some soup?”
I shook my head and forced a smile.
“No, I should be getting back to the ball now,” I said as I stepped into the corridor and pulled the door shut behind me. “I’ll be fine. I promise.”
“Are you enjoying your time at the ball?” Anna suddenly asked as we walked.
“It’s lovely,” I said, because it was the only thing I could think of.
“I have to admit, I’m jealous,” she said with a soft laugh.
I frowned.
“Why are you jealous?”
“To attend a ball,” she said, her eyes lighting up. None of the slaves is allowed to set food in the ballroom. Only the upper staff are permitted there. I can’t even imagine what it must be like. 1
Her words made me falter, and this time, it was my turn to stare.
“You weren’t at the ball?” I asked, turning toward her.
She lifted her brows.
“No, of course not,” she said, looking at me as if I had grown another head.
A chill ran through me.
“Anna, if you weren’t at the ball… then how did you know I was here?”
Third Person POV
Sophia watched as Cecilia ran out of the ballroom. Her brows furrowed, and irritation was evident on her face. She looked around and saw that most of the Alphas and nobles were flirting with women they hadn’t arrived with.
It was sickening to watch, and she pressed her lips together when one of them set their sights on her. She wasn’t there to mingle with other men or even gain their attention. Horny Alphas were the least of her concerns.
No, she had her eyes set on one Alpha, and he was about to change her entire life. Once she becomes the queen, everything will belong to her. She will never have to live in the shadows of another again.
It bothered her that Alpha King Leopold wasn’t at the ball yet. She was literally only there for him, and he wasn’t even around.
In an aggravated huff, she stormed towards where she saw Cecilia running. The patio door slammed shut, making quite a sound, but not many seemed to notice. Once Sophia reached it, she glanced around for a beat longer than necessary to make sure nobody was paying her any attention.
Without another thought, she slipped through the door.

Sophia wandered around for a while; she wasn’t sure where Cecilia would go. She wasn’t even sure whether she was looking for Cecilla or Leopold. She was going to lose her mind if they were found in the same spot.
She continued down a pathway lit by the moon. Drops of silver washing over the marble walk. Sophia’s shoes clicked silently against the hard surface; they were shoes that barely fit her and a dress that was a little too snug. It was clear it wasn’t made for her body type, but she was good at pretending it was.
It wasn’t even the fake dress that she cared about most… it was the very real matching earrings she was wearing that were truly the star of the show. These earrings cost a fortune, and they are gorgeous. Stealing them was easy, but getting away with wearing them in front of everybody, including Cecilia, was a master plan.
Sophia chuckled at the thought, but it died in her throat when she spotted Cecilia in the gardens. Before she could grasp what was happening, a large wolf… bigger than anything Sophia had ever seen in her life, sprang towards Cecilia.
