Chapter 183
Cecilia’s POV
“It seems it was the King who had killed her… and it was the King who tried to cover it up.”
Jax’s words stuck with me well throughout the night. After we said goodnight at my doorway, I sealed it behind me and went to bed. I barely slept, though. I mainly stared up at the ceiling, thinking about everything I had learned today.
It was Leopold… or than likely… Warren, who had killed Vivien. I knew it was a possibility that it could have been him. But I was really hoping that I was wrong. He had been so good not killing anyone this past month, and now it seemed he had gone back down that pathway.
The thought alone sent a chill down my spine.
He was unhinged… unable to be stopped.
“You’ve been quiet,” Jasmine said as we sat in the concubine lounge the next day.
It was midafternoon, and we were having tea and pastries with some of the others. It was quiet without Vivien around; Elora wasn’t around either, or I wondered what that meant.
Jax had said that Landon paid for her silence; perhaps he sent her home as well.
My stomach knotted at the thought.
“Everything alright?” She asked, cocking her head to the side.
I looked up at her as if seeing her for the first time. I wondered if I should tell her what I found out, but if I did, I worried that it would frighten her as it frightened me. I glanced around the room, my eyes finding many faces. Some of them looked upset, while others looked pleased that they got to spend another night at the palace.
I knew that those were the ones who didn’t actually want to leave, but there was a handful that were eager to return to their normal everyday lives with the payment of the palace,
My friends are some of them.
I opened my mouth to reply to her, but the door to the lounge opened, and my eyes darted in the direction of the intruder.
My body tensed when I saw Landon.
“Pardon me, Ladies. I’m here to speak with Cecilia,” he announced, his eyes finding mine.
i blinked, confused as to why he would want to speak with me.
Jasmine raised her brows at me, and I gave her a short shrug of my shoulders, indicating that I had no idea what this was about.
I slowly stood, well aware that everyone had their eyes on me. I followed Landon out of the lounge, both our steps measured. The silence stretched between us as we walked down the corridor, and it grew too intense for me to remain cool any longer.
“What is this about?” I finally asked once we were far enough away from the lounge.
“The King is requesting your presence in his study”
He kept his tone low and his eyes straight ahead, my stomach knotted
King Leopold wanted to speak to me?
Why?
I wanted to ask, but something inside of me was telling me that Landon wouldn’t answer that question. So, instead, I swallowed the lump inside my throat and continued down the corridor behind him, trying to keep up with his long strides.

By the time we reached Leopold’s study door, he paused and turned to look down at me.
“He’s been on edge lately, he warns me. “Don’t take anything he says to you to heart.”
I didn’t like that warning, and it only made me feel even more tense. I didn’t have a chance to say anything, though, because he already had the door open and he stepped inside, motioning for me to follow him.
I took a deep breath and stepped inside as well.
Leopold was seated at his desk; his hair a mess from running his fingers through it and it looked as though he hadn’t slept.
My chest tightened at the sight, but I kept my composure, not wanting him to see me crack.
“Leave us,” Leopold said to Landon, his eyes never leaving mine.
“Yes, Sire,” Landon said, bowing his head slightly before he left the room, shutting the door behind him.
I wanted to beg Landon to stay; to not leave me alone with him. But that would show weakness, and I knew Warren fed off of it.
“Cecilia,” Leopold said, drawing my attention to him. “About last night-”
“I won’t say anything to anyone,” I said before I could think better of it. “You have my word that your secret is safe with me. Until you find your mate… no one will know of your hunt.”
