Chapter 193
I opened my mouth to tellhinjust that, but no words came out.
His hand slowly slid from my wrist to my fingers, intertwining them gently before I could pull away. The intimacy of something so small nearly undid me entirely.
“Warren…” I whispered.
The corner of his lips curved.
“Try again,” he said in a low whisper, and my heart stopped in my chest as I sucked in a sharp breath.
“Leopold…”
He leaned in closer, and I knew at that moment that I was right. How had I not noticed that it wasn’t Warren I was speaking to, but his human counterpart?
His lips were only inches from mine, and it would take only a second for me to close the distance and press myself against him, but I didn’t. I couldn’t bring myself to do it even if I wanted to more than anything in this world.
Instead of kissing me, though, he pressed his forehead against mine and just breathed me in.
“I’ve missed you,” he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Pain twisted sharply through me because the truth of the matter was… I missed him, too-more than I could ever explain.
I let my eyes flutter shut just as his breath fanned against my lips, and I parted them, ready to taste them. But then I heard the lounge door open, and suddenly I was standing alone, feeling colder than ever.
My eyes flew open only to find Leopold standing on the other side of the room, his fingers combing through his hair like he was just caught doing something he shouldn’t have been doing. I was well aware that my cheeks were probably flushed, and I looked like a mess.
“What’s going on?” Sophia asked, staring between the two of us. “Is there something I should know?”
“Of course not,” Leopold said, clearing his throat. “I was just leaving. I have work to do.”
Without another word, he quickly left the lounge, leaving me alone with Sophia.
Sophia glared at me as she took in my flushed cheeks and my trembling lips I’m sure I knew what this looked like to her, and I hated that I had any part in it.
“You must be so proud of yourself,” she said, folding her arms across her chest and narrowing her eyes. “Seducing the king like that? Isn’t that beneath you?”
“I wasn’t seducing anyone,” I tell her. I clean up my mess before heading inside.
“Could have fooled me,” she sneered. “Do you really think I was born yesterday? I know there was tension between you two, and I’m going to tell you once to stop what you’re doing because Leopold is going to marry me and make me his queen, whether you are in the picture or not.
My chest tightened.
“You are speaking nonsense.”
I started to leave the lounge, my hands pushing open the doorway and heading into the hallway, but then I felt hands wrapping around my wrist. I whipped around to find Sophia glaring at me.
“Give up, Cecilia. You aren’t going to win this one. Mommy and daddy already promised that I would be the next queen, and I’m not going to stop until I get what I want,” she hissed.

I tried to pull my arm back, but she was too strong… too angry.
“Sophia, you’re hurting me,” I tried to say, but then she did something unexpected, a grin spread across her face, and then she forced herself backward, stumbling and falling so hard on the ground, I swear I heard a snap.
“Ow!!!!” She screamed as she grabbed onto her ankle, which was now red and swollen with each passing second.
“Holy goddess,” someone gasped as they rushed towards her. “Lady Sophia. Are you okay???”
