Chapter 225
What can we do for you, Landon?” Leopold finally asked after he’d been quiet for some time.
Landon cleared his throat.
“Right… I was actually coming to ask if you’ve seen Jax. But I see that he’s been here,” Landon said, turning to look at Jax. “You’re needed in the courtyard.”
Jax wiped his mouth with the napkin before placing it on the table. He took a long sip of his wine before he stood and glanced down at me.
“Duty calls,” he tells me. “But we will talk later?”
I nodded as my answer and watched as he started towards the doorway behind Landon. I dreaded every step he took further away from me. I didn’t want him to leave me here alone; I was only at this stupid dinner because he agreed to it on my behalf. Now I am stuck here without Jax as my anchor.
Soon, he was gone, and I was left alone with the only people I truly did not wish to be around.
“The meal was delicious, Your Majesty,” my father said, nodding his head at Leopold. “Your staff truly outdid themselves.”
“Wait until you try the dessert,” Sophia said thoughtfully. “The palace has amazing desserts.”
As if summoned, the slaves cleared away our plates and silverware, only to replace them with dessert forks.
They disappeared into the kitchen for a few minutes, only to return with a platter of plates topped with pie. The desserts smelled delicious, and I could tell right away that they were freshly made.
However, once again, my food looked just a little different from everyone else’s. It still looked delicious, but something about it was just different.
“Is there something wrong, Cecilia?” Sophia asked with a frown.
“What is it now?” Diana asked, rolling her eyes.
“Does my pie look a little green?” I asked, glancing at everyone else’s plates; their pies were more on the yellow side. Mine was a bit greener.
“It’s key lime,” Leopold told me, as if it were the most obvious thing. “It’s supposed to be green.”
“Yeah, but yours is yellow,” I tell him, pointing at his plate.
He went to look, but Sophia stopped him with her bubbly laughter.
“Cecilia, you must have gotten the piece with extra lime,” she tells me. “No need to be so quizzical. I’m sure it tastes even better than the rest of ours.”
“Well, aren’t you lucky,” Diana sneered.
I wasn’t buying the act Sophia was putting on, and I wasn’t sure exactly what her game plan here was, but I knew I wasn’t going to let her get the best of me. So, I faked a smile and nodded.
“You’re right… I’m just being too careful,” I tell them, faking a laugh of my own. “Don’t mind me. I’m sure it’s great.”
I stuck my fork into the pie, only for it to hit something hard. Something that shouldn’t be in key-lime pie. I

glanced up at the others who were no longer paying me any attention and were eating their own pies. I took the opportunity, not being the center of attention, to examine my pie a little more closely.
I used my fork to pull something out of the pie.
Was that a pistachio?
How did a pistachio get into my pie? I’m highly allergic to them, and my family is the only one who knows. I glanced up at Sophia, who was continuing to eat her pie as if nothing had happened.
