Chapter 239
ared up at the ceiling, the fluorescent lighting casting shadows along the walls. The smell of antiseptic was potent. It reminded me of the time I was young and tripped over something on the school playground.
I skinned my knee pretty bad and had to sit in the school clinic for over an hour before the healer bothered to give me a Band-Aid.
Sophia happened to be at the clinic as well with a headache, and because she’s an Omega, they worried about her more than the daughter of an Alpha.
I lost a lot of blood that day.
The sound of someone coughing in another bed brought me back to the present moment.
I looked around the bay for a moment, my eyes landing on an older gentleman with greying hair and a shortcut beard; he didn’t have a privacy curtain around his bed, so I was able to see him easily. He was pale and looked utterly exhausted, like the exhaustion was bone deep in his soul.
“Food poisoning,” Victoria said, as if she could read my mind.
“What caused it?” I found myself asking, my heart aching for the man. Nobody deserved to feel like that.
“We aren’t sure,” she said, shaking her head. “He had dinner at a pub last night, and the food is always a gamble.”
“Is he going to be okay?”
“Only time will tell,” she said with a sigh. “As of now, the most we can do is make him comfortable and wait for it to pass. We did all we could for him.”
“Poor guy,” I murmured.
She nodded in agreement.
“But enough about him, let’s figure out what’s going on with you,” she said as she went to grab a cart with medical supplies. “I would like to take a blood sample if that’s okay, Miss Cecilia.”
My heart stuttered at the thought of a needle, but I knew I needed to have this done if I had any hope of finding out what was wrong with Lora and me.
“Yeah, of course,” I say, my voice barely coming out above a whisper.
She sat in a chair next to the bed, gathering the necessary supplies, one of which was a needle. It was large, and it made my heart stop in my chest; I didn’t really do well with needles. Just the thought of it made me queasy.
She started dabbing a cotton swab in antiseptic before she took hold of my wrist and cleaned off a spot. The swab was cold, and a shiver ran up my spine.
“Have you been feeling nauseated lately?” Victoria suddenly asked me, as if she were asking me about the
weather.
I lifted my gaze to glance at her as she continued to swab my arm with the cotton.
“A bit,” I tell her, not wanting to get too into detail about it. “Why do you ask?”
She looked up at me with a frown.
“As a healer, I need to know these things,” she tells me simply. “Have you thrown up?”

I bit my lower lip, my cheeks flushing slightly.
ticing my silence, her brows pinched together.
“There’s no shame here, Miss Cecilia. I advise that you tell me the truth so we can figure out what’s truly going on inside of you.”
“Yes, I’ve thrown up quite a few times these last few days,” I finally admit. “Do you suppose I’ve been food poisoned as well?”
The thought came to me suddenly, and I felt the blood draining from my face.
“It’s a possibility,” she tells me, her eyes shifting back to the cart as she rummages through her supplies. “Bu you aren’t experiencing the same symptoms as that man. Unless you were throwing up blood at one point.”
My eyes widened as I looked over at that man who was now sleeping.
“He threw up blood?” I asked, shifting my attention back to Victoria.
She nodded, her face solemn.
“Yes,” she told me. “Has that happened to you?”
I shook my head quickly.
“No, it was nothing like that…”
“Good… then we can rule that out,” she tells me.
Suddenly, I felt a sting on my wrist, and I winced. I was about to pull my hand away, but her grip tightened.
