Chapter 249
Leopold’s POV
I woke up to the feeling of a cold cloth being placed on my head. It soothed the migraine brewing at the corner of my temple, and I let out a breath of relief.
A warm pair of hands was adjusting the cloth; the scent of something familiar and sweet, like honeysuckle and pine, filled the air, calming my every nerve. Something stirred quietly inside of me; I wasn’t sure what it was, but I knew it was at least content.
When my eyes fluttered open, I saw her face. She was gorgeous; her brows were furrowed as she concentrated and her plump, pink, bottom lip was sucked into her mouth. Her cheeks were a bit flushed, and her Hair was a bit askew, but it made me want to reach up and touch her all the more.
Cecilia.
The woman I shouldn’t want as badly as I do, yet I couldn’t seem to make myself forget about her, no matter how hard I tried. It would probably be better if I let her leave before the wedding so she could get away from me. I can start my life with my mate… but the thought of her leaving… the thought of spending my life with anyone other than her… it drove something deep into my heart that caused so much pain I thought I was about to vomit blood.
Sophia was supposedly my mate, so I shouldn’t be feeling this way about another woman. And yet… I knew Sophia was keeping a secret from me, which led me to believe she might have been deceiving me this whole time. But how she managed to pull it off, I wasn’t sure.
She was still in the palace clinic… at least, I think she was.
The last time I saw her, she was being taken away by Dr. Richards for scanning. They told me it could take a few hours, so instead of waiting there for her as I promised, I ended up taking a walk.
My steps lead me to Cecilia’s room, as they so often do.
Though I wished they hadn’t, because what I saw filled my stomach with lead.
Cecilia was there, in the corridor, but she wasn’t alone.
Jax was with her.
He was saying something to her that I didn’t register because all I could focus on was Cecilia’s face. She had her flushed cheeks and her eyes, wide and beautiful, focused on him. I hated the way she looked at him; it made me remember she wasn’t mine and that her heart belonged to another.
Anger filled me at that moment, but it was nothing compared to the feeling I felt when she stepped into his embrace and allowed him to hold her.
They hugged for what felt like an eternity. I couldn’t stick around longer to see what more they did in the middle of the corridor.
Neither of them had any shame.
It was sickening to watch, so I turned and left.
I went straight to the banquet hall to see how the rest of the preparations were going. But the moment I stepped through the doors, I could feel myself losing control. The dark spots returned to my vision, and an anger like no other took over. Everything turned black, and I’m not sure how long I had been out of it for.

Sometimes, I have memories of harming and even killing others. Sometimes I could still taste the blood on my
ongue and smell the scent of the blood on my fingers. But I didn’t this time.
The only thing I could smell was Cecilia, and it seemed like she was taking care of me.
I knew without even looking around that I was back in my chambers. I recognized the bed and the fluorescent lighting; I could even smell traces of myself around the room, and the comforting feeling of being somewhere familiar was all-consuming.
But it was nothing like being in Cecilia’s orbit.
When she saw that my eyes were open and hyper fixated on her face, she froze.
“You’re awake,” she said, her voice nothing more than a whisper. “You’ve been out of it for a while.”
“What happened?” I asked, my voice coming out gruff.
“Your wolf lost control,” she said softly. “I calmed you down and had some of the warriors take you back to your chambers to rest after you passed out.”
I pressed my lips together as I sat up, my head pounding as the cold cloth fell onto my lap.
“I passed out, and my warriors witnessed it?”
“They only came after the fact,” she explained. “I was the only one who saw you actually pass out.”
