Chapter 261
Sophia really who you want to be thinking about right now?” He asked, bending his head slightly; his lips brushed across my ear, sending warmth through my entire body. “Because I can think of a few other things we can think about instead.”
I let out a shaky breath, my entire body racked with tremors that I tried desperately to suppress. For a moment, my eyes fluttered shut, especially when I felt his tender kisses along the nape of my neck, right where my mating mark once was.
The whimper that escaped me was enough to break me from my stupor.
My eyes flew open, and I put my hands on his chest to push him.
“Seriously, Warren,” I tell him, shoving him a bit harder until he stopped. “Sophia will have both our heads if she found out about this. We have to be careful.”
“Then let her find out,” he said, his tone dropping to its usual growl. “Tired of pretending I don’t have feelings for you.”
“You can’t have feelings for me,” I tell him, wrapping my arms around my middle, both protecting my baby and
From what? I wasn’t sure.
“You have a mate…”
“Says who?” He asked, his eyes holding onto mine.
I blinked, confused.
“Says the mark on her neck,” I tell him, pointing at him. “You marked her, Warren. You claimed her as your mate. Are you saying it was a mistake?”
“I’m saying…” his words failed to leave his lips as he looked into my eyes, and then he let out a low breath. “I’m not sure what I’m saying.”
“Warren-”
“I look at her… I don’t see my mate. I see a stranger,” he admitted, his eyes searching mine as if they were looking for something in them. “She doesn’t know me as you do… she doesn’t get me. She can’t…”
His voice trailed off, and suddenly, I understood.
“She can’t hear you…” I whispered.
It’s strange for Sophia not to be able to hear her mate’s wolf. I never actually questioned it until the moment. Still, maybe that’s why Warren was hesitant about fully accepting Sophia… unlike Leopold, who was more than willing to walk down the aisle with her in his arms.
“No,” he said just as softly as I spoke. “She can’t. Doesn’t that say something?”
I nodded without thought; he was right. It said a lot.
I swallowed and looked up at him.
“Warren… we can’t continue this. It’s not good for either of us…”

“The other day,” he said, cutting me off, his words coming out sharper than I expected. “You told me that you were only using me. That you didn’t care for me. Did you mean it?”
“Warren-”
“Did you mean it, Cecilia?”
My heart stopped; his need to know overpowered my need to keep him at arm’s length. Letting out a breath, I shook my head. I looked away from him before he saw the vulnerability in my eyes.
