Chapter 311

ind a rock… smash the silver…”

If I was going to get out of here, it needed to be now and I couldn’t hesitate.

I forced myself onto my knees.

Pain exploded through my abdomen, and I doubled over instinctively, one hand wrapping protectively around my stomach, my fingers trembling.

“Hang on,” I whispered, tears threatening to fall. “Please… just hang on a little longer.”

My hands and eyes searched desperately around the small space.

And then my eyes found it.

A gagged piece of rock protruded from the wall.

I nearly sobbed in relief; using every ounce of strength I had left, I crawled towards it. My fingers wrapped around the rough stone, lifting it just enough to test its weight.

It was heavy… that was exactly what I needed.

I positioned my left wrist against the cuff, turning the cuff until the thin strap of silver my mother mentioned faced outward.

I stared at it, my hands trembling.

One hit… that was all it would take. Hopefully.

With my heart pounding and tears blurring my vision, I summoned every ounce of courage, lifting the rock high, feeling both fear and hope surge through me, desperate to break free.

Clank!

White-hot agony exploded through my wrist.

I screamed, muffling it with my hands.

The rock slipped from my fingers and clattered across the floor, causing fresh blood to trickle down my forearm.

“It didn’t work…”

Blinking the tears out of my eyes, I saw the tiny crack in the silver, and hope flickered within me.

It had worked.

I just needed to do it once more.

Clank!

Another scream ripped from my throat that I tried to muffle with my hand again.

The crack widened even more.

Clank!

The silver snapped, and I sucked in a sharp breath as I realized my mother had been right. The iron bent apart

easily once the silver reinforcement broke. My hand slipped free, and I stared at it in disbelief.

m free,” I whispered.

I mean, it was only one hand.. but still, it was enough.

“What was that noise?” A guard asked as he made his way towards me, a lantern in hand.

I hid my free arm and the broken cuff behind my back.

“You’re hearing things,” I said, my voice raspy from disuse and the lack of hydration..

“We heard screaming,” he said, narrowing his eyes at me.

“There was a spider.”

He blinked, staring at me for a long while.

“Make any more noise, and we’ll put you under again,” he threatened, his eyes blazing yellow as his wolf surfaced.

I swallowed, not wanting him to see me cower.

I didn’t bother saying a word, allowing his threat to hang in the air between us. Once he was gone, I let out a breath of relief.
