Chapter 313
Cecilia’s POV
The hatch slammed shut behind me, silencing the distant crying from down below. For a moment, I just stood here, soaking in the outside air and basking under the rays of the moonlight. Despite everything, I was starting to feel better already.
The cool night air brushed across my bruised face, carrying the scent of pine trees and damp earth.
I was finally free.
Tears immediately filled my eyes, and I placed my hands on my belly; it wasn’t nearly as big as it was in my dream, but I could feel the slight swell where my baby was growing. It surprised me because I shouldn’t be showing already, but it seems that this baby’s growth was happening faster than I intended.
Warmth spread through me and I knew at that moment that my baby was going to be okay.
I stared up at the sky, smiling at the moon.
“Thank you, Moon Goddess,” I whispered as tears fell down my cheeks. “Thank you, Mom.”
The full moon hung high above the forest canopy; my mother had told me that I needed to follow the direction of the moon and not stop for anything. When I heard the distant voices from under the ground coming closer, panic struck me, and I took off.
Pain exploded through my legs, but I forced myself to keep moving. I couldn’t stop no matter what; just as my mother said. I needed to get her heirloom and get to the palace before Leopold made a huge mistake.
I couldn’t let him marry Sophia; the second they completed their mating bond, he would be forced to live with this curse forever. I couldn’t let something like that happen to Warren… or Leopold.
Every breath burned.
Every bruise screamed.
But none of it mattered; I had to get away from this place… I had to survive.
Branches whipped against my arms as I stumbled deeper into the forest; I had never seen these woods before. The scents were unfamiliar, and I recognized nothing around me.
Towering pines surrounded me on every side, and yet there were no familiar landmarks. There weren’t even any paths.
There was nothing.
But my mother told me to keep running in the direction of the moon, and I wasn’t going to stop listening to her now when she’s already gotten me this far.
I kept the moon directly ahead of me, my eyes fixed on it. I could hear the metal sounds of the hatch bursting open behind me, and I couldn’t help the little scream that escaped my throat. I covered my mouth with my hands as I continued to run, silently cursing myself for being so loud and drawing them right to me.
“There!”
A voice echoed through the trees.
“She’s outside!”

My heart lurched.
hey found me, It wasn’t a surprise. Not really, at least.
I knew they would find me soon enough; this only made me push myself even harder, though. My lungs felt ready to burst. The wolfbane still poisoned every movement, making my muscles feel heavier with each passing second.
“Go that way,” I heard one of them shouting to another.
“Don’t let her reach the tree lines!”
“She’s heading towards the cliff!”
I kept running as fast as I could, ignoring their words. The moon was directly in front of me, if I turned in any other direction, I would no longer be following the moon, and my mother made the instructions quite clear. I am to follow the moon and not to stop for anything.
