Lucy peeked around the corner before motioning for me to follow her. I was a little unsteady on my feet, but after
a few minutes, I finally got my footing. Although Lucy had to help me get out of bed, which was a little embarrassing.
“Hurry,” she whispered, motioning for me again, more urgently this time.
I bit my lip to keep from laughing; she was taking this escape plan so seriously. It was hard not to find her entertaining.
“You are acting like we are prisoners escaping,” I teased as I went towards her.
“In a way, we kind of are,” she teased back.
She took my hand before I had the chance to protest and tugged me into the corridor. Her porcelain hair bounced wildly as she hurried her steps, occasionally glancing over her shoulder to make sure we weren’t being followed.
“You know, I think Mariah was right. You’re terrible at behaving like a princess,” I tell her, letting out a quiet laugh.
If Mariah hadn’t said it, I wouldn’t have believed that Lucy was a princess.
“I hate being called a princess,” Lucy murmured. “My whole life, I had been conditioned to one day be a queen.”
She crinkled her nose as if the thought disgusted her; it made me frown.
“You don’t want to be queen?”
“you
I found that absurd; I might not understand what was going on, but I assumed being a queen was what every girl wanted one day.
“Most would find that life glamorous… but it was never what I wanted. Not really,” she said, shaking her head. ” It’s too much work. I have to wear the proper clothes, and eat the proper foods. I can’t go anywhere without guards following me; I can’t make normal friends. As you can see, I barely had a normal childhood. I just want to leave this pack and travel.”
“If you were to go anywhere, where would it be?” I found myself asking.
“Everywhere,” she answered without hesitation. “I want to explore the world. Help those in need. Fight battles and protect territories. My father said I can protect the territory by becoming a queen… but I know I can’t. Not really, at least.”
“I’m sorry,” I said softly, sympathizing with her even if I don’t know what this kind of thing feels like. “It must have been difficult to be raised with that kind of expectation. That much on your shoulders.”
Talking about this made me wonder about my own upbringing. I felt a sense of sadness forming in my chest.
Where had I come from?
“Hey, no sad faces,” she said, noticing the change in my expression. “You will get your memory back, and then we will find out what pack you are from and alert your family that you’re safe.”
“Pack?” I asked, frowning even more as I stared down at my hands.
I honestly thought that maybe I was just a washed-up rogue, but I don’t say that out loud. I knew I didn’t have a

wolf… at least I couldn’t feel her if I did. For some reason, I was doubting that I truly belonged anywhere.
‘m assuming you’re from a pack; you don’t have the scent of a rogue,” she tells me.
“I didn’t know packs kept tnembers without wolves,” I tell her. “I don’t think I have a wolf.”
She frowned.
“Why do you think that?”
“I can’t feel her. Wouldn’t I be able to feel her?”
“It’s probably because of all the wolfsbane in your system,” Lucy said casually as she stopped in front of an ordinary-looking tapestry depicting a moonlit forest. “You probably won’t feel her for a few days until it’s out of your system.”
“Someone poisoned me?” I croaked, my eyes going wide; this was the first I’d heard that there were drugs in my system.
“Sorry, I thought you knew.”
