Chapter 329
“You really have no idea who you are?” He asked, almost like he still didn’t believe me.
“I wish I knew,” I told him, staring down at my hands. “I don’t even know who the father of this baby is.”
He shook his head, then left the room too.
It didn’t take long for Mariah and Conrad to return. I realized Conrad was acting as her bodyguard, refusing to let her stay in this room with me alone. It made me feel gross, like I truly was some kind of criminal. Maybe I was
“Don’t mind him,” Mariah said softly like she could read my mind. “He’s being overly protective. He’s the Royal Beta and a royal pain in the ass.”
“I can hear you,” Conrad said from across the room.
“I know,” Mariah said without looking at him. “I’m sorry if he scared you… and hurt you. You can tell that not all of us are like him.”
“I didn’t mean to cause any problems,” I told her, my voice barely above a whisper. “If I knew where I came from, I would go back.”
I winced when she put the alcohol wipes on my wrists.
“You don’t need to apologize,” she told me, her eyes meeting mine. “You being here is not your fault. We will find out where you came from. Just hang in there a little longer.”
Once she was done bandaging my wrists, Conrad stepped forward.
“Okay, let’s go,” he said to Mariah. “We are done here.”
She turned to her brother and folded her arms across her chest.
“You should let Lucy in here. She’s probably going crazy in her room right now,” Mariah told him.
He rolled his eyes.
“I’m not letting the princess in a room with an outsider. Her father would have my head,” Conrad said, shaking his head.
“This girl is not dangerous, Conrad,” Mariah told him. “Why can’t you just trust us?”
He pulled the door open and turned to look down at her.
“When you stop keeping this shit from me, I will start trusting you. Until then, let’s go.” He pointed out the door. She stared at him for a beat longer, a challenge in her eyes.
After a moment, she let out a breath and turned to look at me.
“I’ll come see you again soon,” she told me softly. “It’s late. Get some rest.”
On that note, she turned and followed Conrad out of the room, shutting the door behind her.

I welcomed the solitude. At least it was quiet, and I had time to think; I was thankful I wasn’t in some dark, cold dungeon. Instead, I was in a guest room with guards outside my door and a plush mattress that was more comfortable than the cot in the infirmary.
Something about this room felt oddly familiar.
From the way they’ve treated me, I know I have never been here before. But still… there was something here. I got out of bed and walked around the room; it was plain. It was a typical guestroom with nothing truly personal. I didn’t get the feeling this was someone’s personal room.
There was no lingering scent… it was just a room with a bed and a few dressers. A vanity sat on the far side of the room, along with a door I was sure led to a private bathroom. At least I didn’t have to go far if I needed to use the
restroom.
