Chapter 43

Cecilia’s POV

I felt less rested in the morning stretched and slid out of bed as the morning light tried to make its way through the closed curtains. I padded to the window and opened the curtains, letting the sun warm my cold skin.

I let out a breath, trying to calm my racing nerves, but they were a jumbled mess. I was a jumbled mess.

I went to the door when I heard a knock and opened it. I was surprised to see Leopold standing in front of me, and my heart nearly jumped out of my chest. I stepped back as if he had struck me, and his eyes darted around the room briefly before settling back on me, his eyes roaming my body.

I realized that I was still wearing my sleep clothes, and I felt slightly exposed.

He stepped into the room, closing the door behind him and making it nearly impossible for me to breathe.

“Good morning,” he said, almost too casually, though the way he spoke made it sound like a question, like he was trying to assess me with his words and gauge my reaction to him standing there.

“Good morning, Your Majesty,” I said to him, curtsying. “What can I do for you this morning?”

“We need to talk about what happened last night.”

His words were enough to pierce right through me. I should have known I couldn’t have snuck out of his room last night without him knowing I was there at all. Of course, he would smell my scent as soon as he woke up. But I’m sure he also smelled that maid’s scent and Landon’s as well.

It doesn’t take a genius to understand what had happened last night, but there were questions in his eyes that I wasn’t ready to answer, such as what I was doing in his room last night and why I wasn’t killed like everyone else who went against his wolf.

“Is something wrong?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from shaking.

His eyes searched mine for a moment longer before he said, “You tell me.”

I wasn’t sure what to say, there’s no way he knew that I was in communication with his wolf. The only way he would know that is if Warren had told him himself, and I knew with certainty that it wasn’t possible.

“Landon tells me that you kept my wolf from killing a slave,” he continued to speak once it was clear I wasn’t going to. “How were you able to do that?”

My cheeks burned.

“I’m not sure… perhaps he trusts me.”

“Not possible,” Leopold said without a second thought. “The only one he’s ever trusted was Landon, and he would still kill Landon if it ever came down to it. But you were able to keep yourself and that slave girl from getting killed. I want to know how it’s possible. Are you some witch?”

I almost let out a belt of laughter; for him to think I’m a witch, he must be completely out of solutions.

“No, I am not a witch,” I told him, keeping the smile off my face. “I just have a knack for inner animals, I suppose. I wouldn’t overthink it, Your Majesty. The important thing is nobody died last night.”

He narrowed his eyes at me, clearly not buying it.

“And you expect me just to believe that?” He asked, his tone darkening. “You’ve done something to my wolf to keep him grounded, and I want to know what it is.”

It was a demand, and I could feel his Alpha aura penetrating through in almost a painful manner. I winced as it became too much and words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them.

“I am not a threat to him,” I said, urgency in my tone, begging for him to release me from his Alpha’s hold. “The others that he has killed were threats. He aims to protect you, Your Majesty. He harms, though he feels he deserves it, and I don’t believe he’s deemed me fit to deserve sucka fate,”

“How exactly do you know what my wolf wants?”

“It’s just a guess,” the lie came out easily, which surprised me because he still had his hold on me. “It was obvious his intentions.”

“You knew that red triggered him. Landon told me you warned him that it was the slave’s dress that set my wolf off, and to get the slave out of there before I killed her,” Leopold continued to interrogate me as he stepped closer to me.

I kept backing away from him, my heart pounding even heavier in my chest with each step I took backwards and each step he took forward. We did that until my back was pressed against the wall and his arms were on the other side of me, his face only inches from mine as he looked even deeper into my eyes, trying to dig the truth right out of them.

“Again… it was only a guess,” I said, my voice coming out breathier than I intended. “You were staring at her dress as if it had wronged you. I’m sorry if I overstepped, but I’m not sorry for intervening and saving her life. She didn’t deserve to die because she was wearing the wrong color… or whatever.”

I clamped my lips shut when he pressed off the wall and backed away from me. I knew my words were like a slap in the face, and part of me wished I could take them back and bite my tongue.

I clearly had a death wish.

He stared at me for a moment longer, and then he let out a breath.
