Chapter 45
The girls all frowned and looked at one another, confusion etched on their faces.
“And he wanted you to be the one to decide what he wore?” Claira asked, her eyes searching my face. “That’s an odd choice.”
“He didn’t exactly want me to choose his attire,” I say, backtracking. “Landon helped him with that. I just added my input. I was his personal maid before becoming a concubine and already knew what he would look best in.”
Understanding flashed in their eyes, and they relaxed slightly, nodding in unison as they looked at one another.
“Got it,” Claira said after a beat of silence. “Well, we are glad you aren’t dead.”
“Yeah, it would have been tragic,” Jasmine said, a faint smile decorating her lips. “When Vivian sees you… She’s going to lose her mind.”
“I believe she’s in the ballroom right now taking her dancing lessons with some of the other girls,” Cora said, a grin spreading across her face. “We should pay them a visit.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, as did they.
Not long before, we were close enough to the ballroom that I could hear voices. I could immediately pick out Vivian’s voice because it was the loudest, and whatever she was saying made the other girls laugh.
“That just shows you can’t fuck with me,” Vivian said, her laugh boisterous. “Poke the wolf, you’re going to get the claws.”
“She deserved to die the way she did,” another voice said, laughter in her tone as well. “Maybe now Leopold will finally pay attention to the rest of us again.”
“The only one the King is going to pay attention to is me,” Vivian said, cutting her off. “He’s going to make me his favored concubine. I can feel it.”
“Well, this is awkward,” I said, stepping into the room and making them all turn to gawk at me. “Because he just made me his most favored concubine.”
“You’re alive?” One of the girls gasped, all their eyes wide, including Vivian.
“No…” Vivian said, more to herself than to me. “How… how is this possible?”
“It seems you underestimated her, Vivian,” Jasmine said, a smile tugging at her lips. “The new girl is a survivor.”
Ignoring her, Vivian’s eyes turned to slits as she stepped closer to me.
“I don’t know how you got out of your death sentence, but I won’t sit back and watch you take what belongs to me,” she said, pointing her slender finger at my face. “Once the King hears about this, you’ll be sorry.”
“Is that any way for a lady to act?” I asked with condescension. “Perhaps if your manners were better trained, you would be his favored concubine.”
I heard the girl laughing behind me, and the ones behind Vivian gasped in shock. Vivian’s face reddened, and she pressed her lips in a thin line as she glared.
“You have no right to speak to me that way,” she said through her teeth. “You are still an omega, and I am still your superior by ranking.”
Footsteps behind me kept me from responding. Vivian’s expression changed in an instant, a smug look appearing instead.
“Good, now we can set some things straight,” Vivian said, folding her arms across her chest.
I turned to see Landon walking towards us, his eyes meeting mine for a brief moment before shifting to the rest of the room.
“Ladies,” Landon said, stopping next to me. “I’m glad you are all in one place. There’s an announcement I need to share with
