Chapter 47
“Didn’t mean to scare you. You sleep peacefully.”
I let out a breath as realization dawned on me.
“Warren…” I whispered. “What are you doing in here?”
Warren was seated on the edge of my bed, his eyes fixed on my face.
“Leopold made you our favorite concubine,” he said, a smile ghosting his lips and making my chest expand. “That means we spend more time together.”
“Warren, it’s the middle of the night,” I remind him. “You should be asleep.”
“This is the only time I ever get to see you,” Warren complained. “Leopold is asleep. We can hang out.”
“I’m exhausted; I don’t have much energy,” I tell him. “Aren’t you tired?”
“No,” he said, grinning like such a boy. “Let’s go for a run!”
I let out a breath and sit up in bed.
“It’s probably not a good idea,” I tell him. “We could get in trouble.”
“You are favored concubine now,” he reminded me, his grin growing wider. “We don’t need to stay apart.”
He had me there; that was the plus side of being named his favored concubine. Now I could feel free to spend as much time with Warren as I wanted, though having it be the middle of the night would make it far too scandalous for my liking.
However, the way Warren was looking at me, his expression hopeful and his eyes big, made something tug at my heart. I could feel Lora stirring inside of me, stretching and ready to shift.
“Let’s go!” She chanted inside of me. “Shift!”
I knew it was two against one at this point. Who was I to deny the wolves a little freedom? Goddess knows that’s all I’ve been wanting since I stepped foot in this palace… maybe even longer.
I slid out of bed, not caring that I was only in my sleep clothes. Warren’s eager expression made it impossible not to laugh. Without warning, he took hold of my hand and pulled me along with him.
“Where are we going?” I asked as we left my room.
His steps were measured and quick. The halls were quiet with only the light chatter and footsteps of the night guards and the night slaves.
When we finally reached downstairs and went out the door, Warren was quick to shift into his true form. Lora didn’t wait much longer before she was also shifting into her wolf form.
I had to admit, it felt good to be in wolf form. It was a shame Leopold didn’t have the same connection with his wolf. Whereas I could feel, smell, and sense everything had heightened rates around me, and watch through Lora’s eyes as she explored in wolf form, Leopold typically forgot about these adventures when Warren gave him control back.
I couldn’t even imagine what that must be like.
The forest grounds surrounded us as the wolves ran together, jumping over one another like they were nothing more than children. I had never seen Lora have this much fun before, and when Warren tackled her to the ground, pinning her small frame beneath his large one, I thought she was going to melt out of her skin. I had to pull her back a little before she did something we both regretted.
Then a snap of a branch drew our attention to the side, and I saw the shadowy movement of figures.
“I swear I heard something over here,” one man said, his voice sounding, gruff.

“Well, we’d better get rid of it before the King catches wind of an intruder,” another one murmured, their weapons clinking against their armor.
“Guards…” I said, my voice hoarse with worry. “Lora, we need to get out of here before we are found.”
“Warren, let’s go,” Lora said, nudging Warren away from the guards.
