Chapter 49
Warren snorted out a laugh, and I quickly pressed my hands against his lips to keep him quiet. The electric feeling of his lips against my skin made a sliver run up my spine. I swallowed as I looked up at Warren, his eyes swirling with a hidden emotion that I couldn’t detect, but it tugged at my heart just the same.
I was suddenly very aware of how close we were in this closet.
I heard the water running and the dishes being washed Then a few moments later, the water shut off.
“Come on… let’s go finish what we were doing,” the second maid said. “We have more laundry to collect before the morning.”
They retreated from the kitchen, the door shutting behind them. I let out a breath of relief as I removed my hand from Warren’s lips. He was closer to the door, so he pushed it open and stepped out first, and I followed closely behind him.
“That was too close,” I said, turning to face him. “We really need to get back now. We can’t risk it anymore.”
He nodded,
“Okay, Cecilia,” he finally agreed.
Once we were back upstairs, I said goodnight to him and started towards my room. I paused when I felt him behind me still.
“You need to go back to your room,” I tell him, pointing in the opposite direction.
“I sleep with you tonight. I can keep you safe and warm.”
My chest expanded slightly at his words, but I knew we couldn’t spend the night together.
“It’d be better if I stayed in my room and you stayed in yours. Leopold won’t be happy in the morning. Please… don’t make this difficult for either of us,” I pleaded, putting my hand on his arm. “Go back to your room and get some sleep.”
He looked so lost and confused for a moment, and I thought he was going to argue with me. But then he let out a breath and stepped back.
“Good night, Cecilia,” he said before he turned and walked in the direction of his room.
I stared after him for a beat too long before I retreated to my room. Once I was under the covers and tucked away in bed, I was finally able to get some sleep.
Leopold’s POV
The sunlight peering through the curtains was enough to wake me. I crinkled my forehead, my brows pinching together when the lingering taste of apples rested on my tongue.
A familiar and almost comforting scent engulfed me, and I breathed it in, wishing that I could almost bottle it. I felt more rested than usual, and it made me wonder why.
I felt a curve of a body, plastered to my front, and I froze as my hand brushed across the waist of someone else. I opened my eyes and peered down at the person lying in my bed… a person my arms were tightly wrapped around, as if they had a mind of their
own.
Cecilia.
What the hell was she doing in my room? I didn’t remember summoning her last night.
I looked around the place I was so sure was my bedroom, but when I saw the light pink curtains with little flowers on them and a vanity across the room, along with some of the other decorations and furniture that weren’t mine… I knew it wasn’t my room I was in.
