Zoey carefully explained, "I just wanted to share the good news with Dr. Lennox as soon as possible. He asked a few questions, and I couldn't help but tell him that you went alone to beg for mercy..."
Her voice grew quieter and quieter until it was barely a timid squeak, as if she were terrified I might do something to her.
I replied frankly, "Then I assume Dr. Zeller also mentioned that Director Sterling personally went to apologize to the Thornes as well?"
Zoey looked at me blankly. Just as she was about to speak, her phone rang, cutting her off. She quickly excused herself, "There's an issue in the department. You two go ahead and chat."
Then it was just Leon and me left at the table.
He looked at me and asked, "Ferris really went over there?"
See? We both knew exactly what kind of person Ferris was: ruthlessly impartial, strictly business, and famously merciless—the cold-blooded Scalpel of Neurosurgery.
But the fact remained that he had apologized to the Thornes.
After hearing my explanation, Leon's expression grew solemn. "That's unbelievable."
"It just proves that in Dr. Sterling's eyes, his best friend is very important to him."
I didn't want any misunderstandings forming between Leon and Ferris because of me. But it was agonizingly clear—Ferris was willing to abandon his principles for Zoey and swallow his pride for Leon. Yet, when it came to his legal wife, all he had was endless nitpicking and criticism.
"Does your wound still hurt?" Leon abruptly changed the subject, his gaze fixing on my forehead. "Did you not treat it? Why is it still so swollen?"
I hurriedly smoothed my hair over the lump. "I probably just didn't ice it in time. It's fine."
Leon gave a soft hum of acknowledgment. After a moment of thought, he added, "You shouldn't have gone alone last night. That Terrence guy is built like a tank, and he's got a nasty reputation out there. If he had actually gotten violent, you wouldn't have stood a chance."
At the mention of Terrence, I couldn't help but laugh. "You've got him all wrong, Leon. Mr. Thorne is completely whipped by his wife."
"And then what? Did they give you a hard time?"
