Out in the hallway, Zoey beamed with joy. "I can't believe Ferris and Selena had such perfect chemistry! You two had the exact same idea. Now Dr. Lennox is off the hook, and everything is resolved beautifully."
Honestly, I hadn't expected to bump into Ferris in that room either. He was the biggest stickler for the rules, yet tonight, he had bowed his head to a patient's family for Leon's sake.
I also noticed that when Terrence asked for Ferris's personal number, Ferris frowned subconsciously. But after a moment's hesitation, he had typed it into the man's phone anyway.
Reflecting on that, I said politely, "Thank you for your help, Dr. Sterling."
Ferris gave me a flat, sweeping glance, checked his watch, and walked back toward the Department of Neurosurgery without so much as a grunt of acknowledgment.
It was as if he hadn't even heard me.
I was used to it.
News of the Thornes withdrawing their complaint quickly reached the head nurse. She handed me a fresh ice pack, her heart aching for me. "Look at you. Even if you were trying to play the sympathy card, you still should've treated your wound right away."
I offered a faint smile. "It's just a surface injury. It's fine."
Unfortunately, very few people actually knew about the withdrawn complaint. By the time the rumors reached me, the story had morphed into me getting into a physical brawl with a patient. As a result, my already controversial reputation plummeted even further.
Though I felt miserable, I knew this was the time I needed to keep my composure. What I didn't expect, however, was to hear gossip about myself while simply trying to grab a meal at the cafeteria.
"I heard that Selena is pretty decent-looking. Who knows how she really got into Capital General."
"Right? Going to a simple exchange conference and hooking up with a doctor from St. Jude's Medical Center... Clearly, she's not a simple woman."
"Getting into a fistfight with a patient during rounds? A normal person wouldn't have the guts. She definitely has a powerful backer."
A group of interns huddled together, eagerly swapping rumors as if they had witnessed it all firsthand.
They hadn't even noticed that the subject of their gossip was standing just a few feet away.
Just as I was about to turn and leave, a sweet, soft voice sliced through the chatter. "The dispute with the patient's family has been thoroughly investigated. It was all a misunderstanding."
Someone immediately scoffed, "Let me guess, her powerful backer fixed it again?"
The interns exchanged knowing looks and erupted into malicious laughter.
