Zoey stood frantically in front of Ferris, staring at the bloodstains on his lab coat. Her eyes instantly welled up with tears. "Why are you bleeding..." she sobbed.
"It's not mine," Ferris sighed, an edge of exhaustion in his voice. He pointed at my forehead. "It's Dr. Hayes's."
Zoey froze. Tear-streaked and wide-eyed, she turned to me in shock. "Selena got hurt?"
"I'm fine," I waved it off, feigning a casual tone. "He already stitched it up."
Her eyes dimmed at that. She quietly glanced at the sterile tools by Ferris's hand, then sneaked a peek at the wound on my forehead. "With such flawless suturing technique, it obviously had to be Ferris's work," she mumbled.
Her voice trailed off on the last few words, practically screaming how bothered she was by the whole ordeal.
Ferris caught her jealousy immediately. "It was an emergency," he explained. "I just did a quick fix."
A quick fix.
Coming from any other doctor, that might sound arrogant. But coming from Ferris—Capital General's top surgeon—it was simply a fact.
Zoey accepted the excuse. She quickly shifted gears. "You have no idea, Ferris. When I heard Mr. Thorne was causing a scene, I was worried sick. Tell me, with a patient's relative acting that extreme, even if he's subdued now, what if he tries to retaliate against you later?"
With her anxious tone and panicked expression, it was obvious Zoey genuinely cared for him.
"It's fine," Ferris brushed it off. "It's nothing."
"But I was terrified!" Zoey’s voice pitched higher, laced with grievance. "I'd rather be the one who got hurt today..."
Both Ferris and I stiffened at her declaration.
I thought about the three stitches throbbing on my forehead and laughed bitterly to myself.
