The moment I approached the vehicle, the driver pulled the door open. Inside sat Vivian, her face set in a cold, rigid mask.
I climbed in respectfully, but before I could even settle into the seat, she fired off her interrogation. "Ferris is in massive trouble, and you didn't even bother to give the family a heads-up? If the Sterlings didn't have eyes and ears everywhere, Mr. Sterling and I would still be in the dark."
"I'm sorry, I was in a meeting—"
"Is a meeting more important than Ferris? Is your job more important than your own husband?"
I absorbed her aggressive badgering, keeping my tone level. "It all happened so fast. I was still trying to figure out what was going on."
"And? What did you figure out?"
Thinking of the wild rumors circulating the wards, I shook my head helplessly. Vivian scoffed, a harsh sound full of mockery. "You work in the exact same hospital. Your husband gets hauled off, and as his wife, you know absolutely nothing. It's a shame Ferris wastes so much devotion on you."
I furrowed my brows. The dull throb radiating from the stitches on my forehead felt like a silent, cruel joke.
"However..." Vivian suddenly changed her tune, staring at me with a severe expression. "I heard you had several encounters with this Beatrice Thorne?"
I was stunned by how well-connected she was. I hesitated for a fraction of a second before nodding. "Yes. I interacted with her during post-op rounds."
Vivian gave a curt nod. "The Thorne Family has serious leverage in Port Capital. This isn't going to blow over easily. Standard protocol means The Medical Board will pull you in for questioning. I don't need to teach you what to say when that happens, do I?"
It sounded awfully familiar.
Dr. Logan had just hammered the exact same point during his lecture.
