The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 68

My mind went completely blank.

I had performed an emergency surgery to save the lives of a mother and her baby, and my reward was a blatant extortion attempt. It was absolutely unbelievable.

"Ma'am, you need to calm down. Let's just talk about this..."

"Selena Hayes, right? This morning you cursed my daughter-in-law, and I'm going to make sure the people at The Medical Board hear every single word you said!"

The old woman spat out a few more insults before storming out of the office. Dr. Logan chased after her, but returned a minute later with a face as dark as thunder.

He looked at me, letting out a heavy, exasperated sigh. "Selena, what were you thinking? I told you to just apologize and smooth things over. Now look what you've done. You've provoked them. If this really goes up to The Medical Board, don't say I didn't warn you. Best case scenario, you get a formal reprimand. Worst case? Your rotation is over, and your medical career dies before it even begins."

I stared at him in utter disbelief. He met my gaze squarely and said, "Listen to me. Go buy a nice gift basket tonight and visit the patient in recovery. Grovel to the mother-in-law if you have to. Lower your pride..."

"So even though I pulled that mother and baby back from the brink of death, I have to beg for forgiveness?" A massive lump formed in my throat, and hot tears pricked my eyes. "Dr. Logan, you know perfectly well I did nothing wrong."

"You are too stubborn," Dr. Logan muttered, clearly frustrated. "I gave you the solution. It's up to you whether you take it or not."

Leaving his office, I trudged back to my cubicle, the weight of my reality crushing down on me. Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and unstoppable.

I was an anesthesiologist. When we stepped into the OR, our only two priorities were safety and comfort. I had merely done my job in that operating room, only to be bitten by the very people I saved.

I desperately tried to wipe the tears away, hating how weak I looked, but the more I wiped, the faster they fell. The pain in my chest was suffocating.

It was so incredibly unfair.

The Charge Nurse heard what happened and immediately rushed over to comfort me. "Don't panic. Even if this goes to The Board's Mediation Office, they'll pull the security footage. We have evidence. We have nothing to be afraid of."

The word 'evidence' sparked a sliver of hope in me. "You're right! Everyone saw her rip my hair out! I can't just sit here and let them ruin my life."

The Charge Nurse frowned, thinking it through. "The problem is, almost everyone outside that OR was our colleague. That old bat is vicious. She'll just claim we're all covering for each other."

The tiny spark of hope instantly died.
