Zoey was actually offering to ask Ferris to give me a ride home.
Processing this, I stared intently at the young girl standing in front of me, searching those bright, innocent eyes for even a trace of malice.
But there was nothing. After a brief silence, she nervously rubbed her hands together. "I don't mean anything by it, Selena. Please don't think I'm being nosy..."
Hearing the genuine mix of anxiety, sweetness, and earnestness in her voice, my suspicions melted away.
A cheerful ringtone interrupted my thoughts. Zoey looked down, pulling her phone out right in front of me. She glanced at the screen and smiled. "Ferris is looking for me. Think about it, Selena! Call me if you need a ride!"
Before I could say a word, she bounded off down the hall, turning back just once to mimic a phone with her hand.
Watching her practically skip away, a bitter taste flooded my mouth.
Catching a ride? Not happening. Especially not in Ferris's car.
At 5:30 AM, my shift ended, and I caught the earliest subway back to my apartment. Port Capital was painted in a dull, gloomy gray. The streets were entirely deserted, illuminated only by lonely streetlights, and the morning wind carried a biting, bone-deep chill.
For some reason, Zoey's comment about it not being safe for a girl to go home alone echoed in my head, making me quicken my pace.
To my surprise, when I unlocked the front door, the clatter of silverware echoed from the kitchen.
Ferris had beaten me home.
Our eyes met for a fleeting second before he nonchalantly went back to setting the table. I walked past him in utter silence and shut the bedroom door behind me.
I was so exhausted that I didn't even have the energy for a fight. I collapsed onto the bed and passed out instantly.
I had no idea how long I slept, but the blaring sound of my ringtone jolted me awake. I squinted at the screen—it was already late evening.
It was the Charge Nurse.
