The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 70

Before I could even speak, Lucille wailed, tears and snot streaming down her face, "You stupid girl! Why would you do something so foolish? If you died, how were we supposed to live?"

I rubbed my groggy eyes, wondering if this was some bizarre nightmare. Lucille just kept babbling, "We're almost at Capital General, and your husband still won't answer his phone! My daughter is practically dying, and that man is nowhere to be found!"

I bolted upright, staring at my surroundings. This was definitely not a dream.

The ambulance jerked to a halt. The back doors flew open, and a swarm of paramedics rushed in.

Seeing the familiar scrubs, I realized they had brought me to my own workplace.

I frantically waved my hands. "I'm fine, really..."

Lucille furiously wiped her red, puffy eyes, sobbing, "I don't know how many sleeping pills she took! I couldn't wake her up at all! Where's the doctor? Do we need to pump her stomach?"

Remembering the Melatonin I had taken, I quickly tried to explain, "It's a misunderstanding. I just—"

"Where is Dr. Hayes?! No, wait, Selena Hayes! Where is the patient?!"

A panicked roar cut me off. I fought to keep my heavy eyelids open and saw Leon sprinting toward us, looking absolutely terrified.

Lucille saw him and immediately waved him over to the back of the ambulance.

Leon bolted to the doors like he was running a marathon. He quickly scanned me from head to toe, panting heavily. "Selena... are you... where does it hurt?"

I shot Lucille an exasperated look and confessed exactly why I had taken a few Melatonin pills.

Five minutes later, the three of us were standing in the hospital lobby. Lucille stared at her ruined makeup in a reflection, pouting defensively. "I couldn't wake you up no matter how hard I shook you! What was I supposed to think?"

Leon pressed a fist against his mouth, trying and failing to hide his laughter. "You were just worried about your daughter, Lucille. It's completely understandable."

Thank God I was just a lowly intern at Capital General. If I had any real reputation here, this stunt would have made me the laughingstock of the breakroom for the next year.
