Zoey had certainly hit the nail on the head. In the eyes of our colleagues at Capital General, my relationship with Leon Lennox was far closer than my dynamic with Ferris. It made perfect sense for Lucille to contact Leon, but why on earth would she call Ferris?
Perhaps it was just my imagination, but there seemed to be a distinct hint of jealousy in the younger woman's tone when she asked.
Setting aside the fact that Ferris and I were secretly married, our public dynamic was naturally nowhere near as close as his bond with Zoey.
So for Lucille to contact him privately really did seem out of the ordinary.
Lucille realized this as well and stammered, "Look at me, my mind was all over the place. Selena wouldn't wake up no matter what I did, and I was terrified she might have done something drastic. I didn't know many medical professionals personally. Aside from Leon, the only other doctor I could think of was Dr. Sterling, who I saw a couple of days ago. It was a moment of sheer panic, and I apologize if it was inappropriate."
Zoey let out a soft sigh of relief, the suspicion fading from her eyes. She put on a sweet smile. "Lucille, let's exchange numbers before you go. If you ever need help with anything in the future, you can contact me directly."
Lucille froze for a second, clearly not expecting the girl to be so enthusiastic. She chuckled, "You're not just beautiful, but you have such a kind heart. Selena is truly lucky to have colleagues like you."
Zoey smiled bashfully. "As long as Selena is okay, that's all that matters. Besides, the hospital is already handling the complaint. We'll put our heads together and help her get through this crisis."
Lucille frowned, instantly alert. "What complaint?"
Zoey slapped a hand over her mouth in feigned shock. Her doe-like eyes darted around in a panic before pleadingly looking at me for help.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
I feigned nonchalance and said, "It's just a little misunderstanding. Don't worry about it."
Lucille gave me a skeptical look but didn't press the issue.
Ferris, who had been silent up until now, finally spoke up. "Next time, make sure you understand the situation before calling an ambulance. Don't waste public emergency resources."
He delivered the reprimand with an air of absolute self-righteousness.
His words left the three of us utterly speechless.
