Sebastian locked his phone and looked at Riley. "You're awake?"

"Yeah." Riley immediately sat up straight. The blanket that had been covering her slid down to her lap. She looked down at it, stunned for a moment. Where did the blanket come from?

Did Winona put it on her?

Speaking of which, where was Winona?

Riley scanned the room.

Sebastian seemed to read her mind. "She got hungry and went out to grab some food."

Riley nodded. "What are you doing in here?"

Sebastian gestured to his phone. "I stepped in to handle some work."

Riley neatly folded the blanket and placed it on the sofa. "I'll leave you to your work, then. I won't disturb you."

Sebastian gave a slight nod.

Riley stood up and headed for the door. Just as she took a few steps, she heard Sebastian ask, "Are you and Pierce having a fight?"

Riley paused. So he had seen their unpleasant exchange earlier. Without knowing what they had talked about, it certainly looked like a typical marital spat from the outside.

She played along with his assumption and nodded. "Yes."

"Marriage requires knowing how to navigate those things."

Hearing this elder-like, mediating tone, Riley expected him to follow up with a lecture about how spouses needed to be tolerant of each other. She never anticipated what he would say next.

He said, "But no matter how you navigate it, remember one thing. Life is too short to force yourself to endure things that make you miserable."

Riley looked at Sebastian in surprise, almost instinctively asking, "And what if we can't navigate it anymore?"

A fleeting trace of surprise flashed across Sebastian's usually unfathomable eyes, disappearing as quickly as it came without leaving a mark. "Then don't navigate it." As he said this, his fingers tightened slightly around his phone.
