Jasmine Smith froze for a moment.
What did one thing have to do with the other?
Her sister was sick and couldn't dye her hair. If her sister saw her with dyed hair, she would be heartbroken.
So, Jasmine wasn't allowed to dye hers either.
"Because..."
Just as she was about to answer, Cassidy Quinn called her over to take her mark. Jasmine quickly tossed out a, "I'll tell you later," let go of the railing, and walked back to Cassidy's side.
The short video shoot went incredibly smoothly.
For the first time in her life, Jasmine held a real pair of men's underwear.
They were boxer briefs.
Completely different from women's underwear.
There was a weird extra pouch of fabric right in the middle.
But the main issue was that the underwear was damp.
Even though Jasmine had watched Nora Dodge take the brand-new underwear out of its packaging, run it under the faucet, wring it out, and toss it on the balcony just to make it look convincingly used, she still felt a strange, inexplicable aversion.
She just couldn't bring herself to touch it.
Jasmine hesitated and said, "Wouldn't damp underwear be harder to blow away in the wind?"
"A brand-new pair would look too fake," Nora replied.
"It doesn't matter," Cassidy chimed in. "In the internet business, we don't need logic. We just need shock value."
Jasmine was speechless.
Struggling internally, her brows twisted into a knot, her nose wrinkled slightly, and her lips pursed. She squatted down, using her nails—the sharp, long, diamond-encrusted acrylics she had gotten specifically for her engagement party.
Pinching the edge of the fabric with her jeweled nails, she hooked the underwear up from the ground.
As she passed it along the railing to Felix Hart, her hand trembled uncontrollably.
When they reviewed the final footage, Felix, Cassidy, and Nora all marveled in unison, "Your acting is incredible."
"Your hands are so photogenic."
"And that Parkinson's-like tremor? An Oscar-winning actress couldn't have faked that better."
Jasmine didn't know what to say.
She wasn't acting.
It was all genuine emotion.
What was supposed to be a test run ended up as the perfect final cut.
Felix eagerly sat down at his computer to edit the footage.
Cassidy explained a lot of work arrangements to Jasmine.
She even brought up the profit-sharing model for the video revenue.
The more professional and business-like Cassidy made it sound, the more at ease Jasmine felt.
Back at the apartment, Nora helped Jasmine tidy up her room.
Cassidy went next door to find Felix.
She gave him a brief rundown of Jasmine's situation.
"She just called off her engagement and got kicked out by her family. She doesn't have any money on her. I gave her some emergency cash and called it an advance on her bonus, but knowing her personality, she won't touch it unless it's an absolute emergency."
Cassidy didn't go into too much detail. After all, Felix was an outsider, and it wasn't right to air the family's dirty laundry.
But she couldn't leave him completely in the dark either. Felix had a big mouth and a tendency to ramble, and Cassidy was worried he might say something to upset Jasmine.
"You're responsible for her three meals a day. You have to ask her what she wants for every meal. You must take the initiative, got it?"
"Also, keep the food light. Her ear is injured and hasn't fully healed yet. Keep an eye on her, and if anything happens, call me immediately."
Cassidy narrowed her eyes at Felix. "Did you memorize all that?"
Felix nodded thoughtfully. "Got it."
Then he asked, "What happened to her ear?"
