Chapter 349
Ellie’s POV

I wound up signing up for the exam the day after I received the divorce papers. It felt like the right decision to make, like a new step in a life that was finally ahead of me instead of behind me.
“Fantastic!” Hanna’s response read. “I’ve got your time slot scheduled for the Saturday two weeks from
now. We’ll handle your materials; just show up on time!”
Those two weeks passed in a blur, which was a welcome reprieve from the way time had seemed to be moving at a snail’s pace since my mother’s death. I spent most of that time studying at the healer academy when I wasn’t in class, and most nights I stayed up with books in front of me and candles burning until my head finally dropped and exhaustion took hold.
Lucas said I was overworking myself, but the work was an escape from the spiraling thoughts. Every time I shut my eyes, I saw my mother laying limp in my arms and I would imagine Vivian puppeteering the whole thing with Dominic at her side and I just couldn’t handle it. So I did my best to keep my eyes open as much as I feasibly could.
For those two weeks, my wolf was quiet. I told myself it was just because she was recovering from my injuries, but we both knew what it was. Dominic. She didn’t want to let him go, and as long as I ignored the mate bond, she hardly spoke at all.
By the time the morning of my exam came, I was tired but excited. Lucas drove me to the headquarters. There were already a dozen other candidates milling around outside when we arrived, all of them looking equally as nervous as the face that stared back at me in the passenger side mirror.
“You’ll do great,” Lucas said as I climbed out of the car.
“Sure,” I muttered.
“I’m serious,” he insisted. “You’re one of the best healers I know. They’d be stupid not to pass you.”
I grabbed my bag and headed toward the entrance.
Inside, there were stations set up, each one with a different scenario. I could see mannequins, medical equipment, and people in volunteer shirts with fake gashes on their heads. One woman was holding a comically large fake pregnancy belly under her shirt.
A woman with a clipboard approached me as I walked in. She was wearing a volunteer t-shirt and had a bandage wrapped around her head, probably on a break from acting in one of the scenarios.
“Name?” she asked.
“Ellie.”
She scanned her list and made a check mark. “You’re in group three. Head to station five and wait for further instructions.”
The examiner stood off to the side with his clipboard. “Begin,” he said.
I dropped to my knees beside the patient and immediately started my assessment. Airway first. I tilted his head back and checked to make sure there was no obstruction. Clear. Breathing next. His chest was rising and falling, but it was uneven. Possible punctured lung. Circulation. I pressed my fingers to his neck and felt for a pulse. It was weak and a little unsteady.
I grabbed my bag and pulled out my supplies. Gloves went on first, then I reached for the gauze, bandages, and scissors. I cut away his shirt to get a better look at the damage.
