Chapter 354

That was a lie. I knew exactly what I was thinking. I was thinking about the night Ellie and I had found Vivian’s necklace on the rogue from Gareth’s camp. Vivian had said the rogue must have stolen it from
her room, but Ellie insisted otherwise, and it turned into an argument.
At the time, I thought Ellie was just being paranoid. She’d been acting that way around Vivian for months by then, causing scenes and accusing her sister of heinous crimes. I thought it must be related to that trauma she mentioned, but now…
What if Ellie was right? What if Vivian had given that jewelry to the rogue from Gareth’s camp? And what if she’d paid the rogue that was currently sitting in the cells, too?
I stopped walking. My Beta nearly ran into me.
“I need to go somewhere,” I said.
“Where?”
“Gareth’s camp.”
He frowned. “Why?”
“Just trust me.”
The camp was a mess. Most of it had been burned during the battle, and what hadn’t been burned was overgrown with weeds and moss. The longhouse was still standing, but barely. The roof had caved in on one side, and the walls were scorched black.
I stepped over a fallen beam and walked inside. The air smelled like ash and rot. There were broken furniture and scattered belongings everywhere, and the floor was littered with debris.
I started searching. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but whatever it was, I knew I would recognize it
when I found it.
In the corner, near what used to be a makeshift desk, I found a stack of papers. Most of them were charred beyond recognition, but a few were still intact. I picked them up and scanned through them.
They were covered in scrawled handwriting. Notes about Lycans. Theories about bloodlines and ancient power. Ramblings about queens and prophecies and destiny.
Every single piece in the box belonged to her.
I set the box down and stared at it. My mind was racing. Why would Gareth have all of Vivian’s jewelry? If she had lost an entire box like this, she would have reported it. I knew Vivian; she treasured all of her things, and her jewelry most of all. She wouldn’t just let an entire box of it get stolen and not say anything about it.
As my mind raced, staring at the jewelry sitting in the box, the pieces started falling into place. The jewelry we’d found in the rogue’s possession. Abigail’s story. Ellie’s accusations. The perfect kidnapping scene, curated just to draw me away from a pivotal night in my marriage…
She’d lied.
She’d paid Gareth to kidnap Ellie. Just like she’d paid the rogues to kidnap Abigail.
Vivian had orchestrated all of it for her own gain, and I had been the fool who believed her.
