“I’m alright, but thank you.”
She gestured to the chair with the blanket on it. I sat, folding my hands in my lap as she sat behind her desk again and pulled a folder from the stack on her right. “We have several open assignments right now,” she said. “You/re welcome to choose from them, but I have one in particular I think would be most suitable for you.”
I nodded. “Let’s hear it.”
“Have you heard of a pack called Goldenveil?”
I thought for a moment, then shook my head. “No, I haven’t.”
“I’d be surprised if you had.” She opened the folder and turned it to face me. A map was clipped inside the front cover, a region marked in the upper mountain territories. It was a very, very long way north, deep into the / mountains. “It’s a small pack. Remote. Deep in the Veils.”
I’d heard of the Veils. Everyone had, really. It was a mountain range far north, mostly visited by hikers. I’d never had much of a reason to go to a place like that. Few people did. The mountains were tall and rugged and cold, punctuated by patches of glacial deserts that I’d seen in pictures but never thought of visiting myself.
“Until about eighteen months ago,” Hanna continued, “Goldenveil held neutral territory status. It wasn’t registered, nor was a part of the Alpha Council. Something about a rogue attack many years ago that scattered the pack. But the Alpha, Terence, managed to bring the pack back together and reinstate it. He joined the Alpha Council a month ago.”
“So they’re in need of healers,” I said.
She nodded. “When a pack comes out of neutral status and joins the official territories, there are a lot of gaps to fill. Medical care being one of the most significant.” She folded her hands on the desk. “Goldenveil has no resident healer. The nearest pack with proper medical facilities is three hours away by road.”
I looked at the map again. The Veils sat near the very top of the page, so far from where I thought I would wind up going that it was almost dizzying just to think about. And yet, a pang of excitement shot through my chest at the idea of a new adventure. A fresh start.
“What’s the pack size?” I asked.
“Fewer than eighty members, I believe,” Hanna replied.
“And the assignment length?” I cocked my head at her.
“Three months. But Ellie, I want you to know that this isn’t a placement where you’d be supplementing an existing team. You would be it. The only healer they have.” She smiled. “That’s why I wanted you for the job. Because I know you’re capable.”
I swallowed.
Hanna grinned. “I was hoping you would say that.” Licking her thumb, she flipped to the last page in the folder, where my contract sat with an empty line at the bottom, just waiting for my signature. She handed me a pen, and I took it.
I stared at the contract for a moment, my mind racing. It felt terrifying and yet so exciting at the same time. A new/ chapter, a fresh start, a chance to start my life all over for the third time in a place I never even dreamed of visiting before. It was so far outside the realm of everything I had been fed in my past life that the very thought was almost incomprehensible.
And yet, I was already dreaming of it.
With a deep breath, I lowered my pen to the page and signed my name.
