“Coffee is complimentary,” she said. “But breakfast isn’t for another hour.”
I nodded, walking over to the carafe, and filled a cardboard cup. As I dropped some sugar cubes and creamer into it, I glanced over my shoulder and said, “Where can I buy some warm clothes?”
The woman snorted. “I was wondering when you might ask that question.”
“That obvious, huh?” I asked, turning. I liked this woman already.
“We’ve only got one clothing shop in town,” she said. “It’s right down the street. Marta owns it; she’ll help you.”
“Thank you,” I said, cramming a lid onto my cup and turning to leave.
“Tell her Bernice sent you,” she called after me. “She’ll give you the local rate.”
Outside, the cold was even worse than last night. A light dusting of snow had settled on the cobblestones overnight, promising a winter that would be much deeper and colder. I shivered as I hurried down the street, searching for the clothing shop.
The shop was wedged between a bakery and a small bookstore. I stepped inside and immediately let out a breath of relief at the feeling of warmth on my skin.
A woman was behind the counter who looked exactly like the woman from the hotel. Twins, I realized. She looked up at me with that same gaze, expectantly, like she was waiting for me to spit it out.
“Bernice sent me,” I said.
The woman rubbed the bridge of her nose. “She’s always sending tourists thinking they’ll get a discount…”
“I’m not a tourist,” I said with a wan smile. “Not technically. I’m the new healer.”
The woman’s brows lifted at that. “Well, why didn’t you open with that?” She gestured toward the racks. “Coats are at the back. Socks are on the middle shelf. Do you have waterproof boots?”
Dominic was already in the lobby when I got back to the hotel. He was leaning against the front desk, chatting with the woman behind it.
He looked at my shopping bag, then at my coat when I entered.
“Someone did some shopping,” he said. He glanced at his watch. “Can you be ready in half an hour? I want to get there early.”
I nodded, taking the steps to our room two at a time, and put away thoughts of Lycans and opal eyes for a little while so I could get ready.
