Chapter 389
“I’m so sorry,” she said quickly, bowing her head. “I should have been at the entrance; can I take your coat?”
“I’m alright,” I said. “Don’t worry about it.”
She looked flustered. “I apologize for not being here sooner, my Lady.”
“Lady?” I laughed. “I’m just the traveling healer,” I said.
“Oh.” She lifted her head. “I thought… But you look so similar to the Alpha family.”
“That’s not the first time I’ve heard that today,” I muttered. “But no, I’m not one of them. I’m Ellie.”
“Amelia.” Her shoulders relaxed a little.
“That’s a beautiful name,” I said.
She smiled. “Yours as well.”
She looked like she was about to say something else, but then her eyes caught something over my shoulder, and she lowered her gaze.
“Careful,” she whispered. “The Alpha is coming. You should show respect.”
Brows lifting, I turned.
A man had come in. He was tall and handsome, with silvery hair pulled back into a neat bun at the back of his head. He leaned on an ornate wooden cane that seemed more for show than practicality at first, although, upon closer inspection, I realized he had a limp. The top of the cane, the handle, was an enormous polished opal. I could see it shimmering in the light from here.
But it was his eyes that truly struck me.
Like the cane, they were…
Opal.
My wolf suddenly surged, so abrupt and powerful, that I shot to my feet without even thinking. It wasn’t the pull toward a mate this time, though, that had her howling in my head. It was something older than that, below memory and instinct and everything else I knew how to name.
She knew him.
His voice was strangely familiar. I almost swore I had heard it before somewhere, perhaps in a dream within a dream.
“Yes,” I said quietly. “I’m Ellie.”
Dominic, as if on cue, showed up out of nowhere. He was a little breathless, as if he’d heard the Alpha was coming and hadn’t made it in time. “Ellie,” he said, “this is Alpha Terence. Alpha Terence, this is Ellie.”
Terence’s expression remained calm, but his eyes, so much like mine, glimmered with something that could have been surprise or relief or pride or a million other things.
“Ellie,” he said. He formed my name like it was precious and foreign to him all at once. “Could we speak in private, please?”
