Dominic’s POV

Twenty minutes. That was how long Ellie had been gone, and it was already the longest twenty minutes of my life.

The wall was impenetrable. The roar of the water on the other side drowned out every shout we sent through the tunnel, and after a while Bastian stopped shouting and just laid there on his belly with his ear pressed to the opening, listening for a voice that never came.

I didn’t need my ears. I had the bond.

It wasn’t much. Ever since the ceiling came down on her, her end of it had been faint and flickering, slipping in and out as her wolf scrambled to heal her injuries. But it was there. Faint but present. As long as I had that, I knew she was alive, and that was all that mattered.

“Well?” I called through the link. “How’s it going?”

She didn’t answer, but she didn’t need to. I could feel the awe and joy coming through the bond. It hit me square in the chest, forcing a laugh out before I could stop myself.

Bastian’s head snapped up. “What?”

“She found something.” I pressed my palm flat against the wall. “Whatever’s over there, it just made her very, very happy.”

He grinned. It was the first real grin I’d seen out of him in days. Or actually, ever.

But the joy didn’t last long. Because, suddenly, the entire mountain suhddered.

It happened so fast neither of us had a chance to register it. The little tunnel rumbled, and then a great plume of white dust sputtered out, turning the air into a cloud. I coughed, waving my hand in front of my face as I rushed forward, banging my fists against the stone.

“ELLIE!” I shouted. “ELLIEEEE!”

Bastian cursed and jammed his good arm in up to the shoulder, clawing at rubble I couldn’t see. I barely heard him. The bond flooded with horror, and I reached for it, about to send her a mindlink.

Before I could, I heard a throat clear behind me.

I whirled around to find that a figure had stepped into the chamber. A woman in a dark coat and full climbing gear, rope coiled over one shoulder, dust on her boots.

Bastian pushed himself up.
