“You think it’s me,” I whispered. “The child in the promise.”

“You died. You came back. You heal.” She smiled. “And you love a wolf.”

Heat crept up my neck despite everything.

“But I’m trapped here,” I said. “If yo uwant me to fulfill this prophecy, or whatever it is, I need to get out of here first.”

She nodded. “That’s why I guided you to the mushrooms-so we could talk properly. Ellie, there is a hidden passage that will take you directly to Goldenveil. It passes through the-“Her visage suddenly flickered, her voice going in and out like a radio broadcast losing service. “The lib-”

“Wait.” I sat up straighter. “Through where? Where is it?”

“It’s through the…”

“Hello, Ellie.”

Suddenly, like mist dissipating, the princess’s entire image scattered across the cave. In its place stood someone else. A woman. A face I knew all too well, and it was not kind or friendly, and it did not have opal eyes.

“Stephanie,” I breathed.

“Still alive,” Stephanie said. “You’re a hard girl to put down.”

I blinked at her. The walls kept breathing. Her outline trailed a little when she tilted her head. Definitely still the mushroom. Definitely.

“You’re not real either,” I said.

“Are you sure about that?”

Her hand shot out and closed around my broken one. And squeezed.

The pain was white. It tore through the fractures, up my arm, straight through every layer of fog the mushroom had wrapped me in, and the scream that came out of me was real. All of it was real. Hallucinations didn’t grind broken bones.

“There we go,” Stephanie said. “Now you’re paying attention.”

“How “I gasped, cradling my hand against my chest. “How did you find me?”

“You scratched your path into half the walls down here, and then you went to sleep wearing a light.” She crouched in front of me, calm as ever, and pulled a small leather pouch from her coat. “I’ll give you this much, though. You made it further than I thought you would.”

I got my feet under me and tried to stand. The floor tilted, and I fell right back down. “What did you do to them? Dominic. Bastian—”

“They’re asleep. Unlike you, they get to wake up.”
