Chapter 524
“What’s there to tell?” Lucas said. “Take some time, have the baby, the nget back out there.”
“It’s not that simple,” Abigail pointed out.
“No. It’s not.” I kept my eyes on the glass. “I don’t know if I can see myself out there anymore. Months on the road, sleeping in strange places, missing everything back here. One assignment was already an entire adventure, and I’m exhausted. Part of me just wants to be home. Is that so terrible?”
“It’s not terrible,” Sarah said. “But why does it have to be one or the other?”
“Ellie.” Lucas’s voice was firm. “You were born to be a healer. You can’t just leave it behind because of a baby. Because of Dominic.” His face tightened a little at the mention of my mate. I knew it was still a sore subject with him. It probably always would be, to an extent.
“Dominic would never ask her to leave it all for good,” Sarah said. “People take breaks for newborns all the time. Ellie, I think you’re well within your rights to enjoy your pregnancy, and your marriage, until you’re ready to get back to work.”
I blushed a little. “We’re not married,” I pointed out, glancing up at her. “Remember?”
Sarah pursed her lips to keep from smirking.
The next morning, I woke early. I hadn’t slept much the night before, too busy tossing and turning and thinking about all of the possibilities. Dominic was already up, of course, off on campaign business as usual, so I took it as
my cue to get up too.
After dressing and eating a quick breakfast, I drove to the headquarters. I didn’t make an appointment, but I knew Hanna would be there. She was. One light was on in the window despite the early hour, and when I entered, the bell tinkled merrily over the door.
The headquarters had changed a lot in the past few months. A lounge area had been put in, several plush, mismatched couches and armchairs that were clearly second hand. Someone had painted a lively mural of smiling faces and dancing children on the wall, and there was a new front desk in the corner, where Hanna currently sat, poring over something on her computer.
Her face lit up when she saw me, and she stood, crossing the room with her arms spread.
“There she is.” She embraced me tightly, smelling like vanilla and cardamom. “I figured you’d come say hi sooner or later. How was the assignment?”
“Eventful,” I said vaguely as we pulled back.
Hanna’s eyes glimmered. “I assume you’re fiending for another already?”
