Chapter 533

Dominic’s POV
Seventeen times. That was how many times I’d checked my jacket pocket since sunrise, and it wasn’t even eight o’clock yet.
The ring was still there, of course. It had been there the first sixteen times, nestled in its little velvet box, and it hadn’t sprouted legs and run away yet. And yet my hand kept drifting up to pat it anyway, as if a pickpocket had snuck into my own house and lifted it while I was busy counting folding chairs.
Get a grip, I told myself. You’re an Alpha, not a pup hiding a frog in his pocket.
Easier said than done.
I’d slipped out of bed before dawn to take it from the nightstand drawer while Ellie slept. The sunrise was just starting to seep through the curtains, catching the gold in her hair, and I’d stood there a moment too long, watching her, the bond between us humming low and warm and content.
She had no idea. Seven months of practically living inside each other’s heads, and somehow, my mate still had no idea.
Tonight, that was going to change.
Downstairs, the kitchen was bustling already despite the early hour. The caterers had commandeered every counter in the kitchen.
“Morning, Alpha!” one of the kitchen staff called out over the clatter of sheet pans.
“Big day,” another chimed in.
“Huge,” I agreed, snagging a roll off a cooling rack. The cook swatted at my hand with her dish towel, but I shoved the roll into my mouth before she could stop me.
My Beta was posted at the kitchen table with three lists fanned out in front of him and a mug of coffee that had long gone cold. He had dark circles under his eyes and looked like he hadn’t slept.
“Caterers are on schedule,” he said, skipping the good-mornings and how-are-yous. “Sound check’s done. Florist should arrive at nine, then parking crew at ten, and the gates will open at noon. The second food truck should arrive within the hour.”
